Today, I was outside searching for "treasures" with my son using small plastic shovels. All of a sudden he starts screaming. He dug up the bones of our old dog. I told him that we had sent him away to live on a farm, I even helped my son write letters to the farm owners. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was babysitting my little cousin when we decided to go outside and have a "treasure hunt" in the backyard. The first thing we found? The bones of her pet dog who had passed away four years ago. FML
Today, I told my daughter that we were going to the beach. Today, my daughter also tried to dig up our deceased dog, who we buried in our back yard last week, so he could come along. FML
Traumatic
Today, I sent my kids to play in the back garden and immediately heard them screaming. We buried our dog last week and last night some animal dug her up and spread the bones and rotting flesh around. The stench was horrendous, the kids are traumatized, and I vomited while reburying the bits. FML
Today, my new dog unburied my old dog and chewed on his bones. FML
Archeology
Today, I was digging the foundation for what will eventually be my garage. My kids wanted to help Daddy, which means they had a front row seat with their little spades when we unearthed the skeleton of some previous homeowner's dog. Now they won’t stop crying. FML
Today, I took my son for a walk to tell him about the passing of our family dog. As we were walking by the river, Ozzy (our deceased dog) was laying on the riverbank. My son thought he just ran away and we found him. Turns out my husband was too cheap to pay the 100$ vet disposal fees. FML
Today, while I was on a field trip with my son, my husband decided to get rid of our dog without asking anyone. Now I get to pick up the pieces of a broken heart, and he thinks he did nothing wrong. FML
Creepy backyard
Today, I found a pile of animal skeletons scattered in my backyard. It appears that last night, mother nature decided to rain so hard, that the graves of my childhood pets floated back up to the top, and covered half of my field. I now have to pick all of it up before my dog sees them. FML
Today, my dog died. My parents told me to bury it out back. In the process, I managed to dig up my cat. FML
Today, I realized burying my dog underneath our swing-set was a bad idea. My two sons are now scarred for life. FML

Perhaps you should have buried the dog further down... he must've been awfully close to the surface if your son was able to reach the bones with a plastic shovel.

And this is why we shouldn't lie to our kids about dumb stuff. They can handle the truth.

Pretty sure you should have told him the truth, if you hide things as small as a pet dying how is he going to handle something much bigger in the future? For example, the death of a grandparent? Don't keep him in the dark! On another note, if you knew you were going to be digging around in the yard how come you didn't remember where you buried your dog?

I have to say that was very sweet of you to help him write those "farm" letters but I think it's best if people try to explain the truth of death in these situations. Granted, children will understand only so much but there are some great books out there made for them in these situations including ones on pet death. Good luck!

wow . how about next time you don't let him get a dog at all instead of buying him one and then killing it ?

Just lie again. I'm sure he doesn't know it's the dog.

#43 im sure he didnt purposely kill the dog after buying it. who ever said that he bought the dog for his son? maybe it was already old when the kid was born?

I agree with #3. Not just because it prevents your kid from digging him up - the whole six feet under tradition started because it kept the smell of the decaying bodies from attracting wild animals.
