Today, I went on a fabulous date with a really cute, smart, funny guy. He only mentioned his dad, so when I asked about his mom, I asked if they were divorced. She'd died of breast cancer so I felt awful. Then I asked if his dad had ever remarried. His stepmom had died of cancer too. FML

Today, while I was on a date, I noticed my ex-boyfriend in the restaurant, and he looked sad. So I walked over to see him and jokingly said, "You look like your mom died or something!" She had. FML
Today, I went on a first date with a guy I really like. He brought up that there was a person staring at us from a nearby table. That person was my mom. FML
Today, I went on a movie date with a guy. He brought his mom. FML
Today, a guy who I've been on five dates with called me for the first time in 2 weeks. The first thing I said was, "Don't expect me to go out with you again after going AWOL on me." Then he told me his mom died. FML
Today, I went on my first date since my husband passed six years ago. My date’s ex-wife happened to be at the restaurant he picked, and he confessed he expected her to be there. Without missing a beat, I told him that’s a perk of dating a widow, never running into the ex. Evidently a bit too dark for him. FML
Today, my boyfriend of 2 months got upset and frustrated with me because he had yet to meet my mom. I'd told him on our first date that she passed away 4 years ago. FML
Today, I was supposed to be going on my first date with a guy I really liked. He never showed up. I just found out my dad was outside washing the car when my date showed up. He told him he didn't have a daughter and to never show up on his driveway again. FML
Today, I knew my mom wanted to go out to dinner with me and my sisters, and I couldn't remember why, so I called her and said, "Why are we going out to dinner?" and she goes, "Well, we always have." I forgot today's the anniversary of my stepdad dying. FML
Today, I found out my dad is dating my dead mom's best friend. FML
Today, I had a first date with a guy I met online. And his mom. FML

That's so sad :( don't beat yourself up OP. although it may have felt uncomfortable, the best thing to do is offer your condolences, and you can be supportive if you two decide to pursue a relationship.

Why ask about divorce though? That's just a weird way to go. I didn't find out what happened to my best friend's dad (or lack there of) for almost two years since we became close. It's a touchy subject for most people so it's best to avoid unless they bring it up.

When starting a relationship it is normal to ask these things, especially with how normal divorce is these days. Maybe OP's parents were divorced and she figured they could have something to discuss, both being from broken homes. The whole point of dating is to get to know the other person.
