Today, my girlfriend turned down my marriage proposal because the ring I gave her was bigger than the one her sister got at her proposal. Apparently she wouldn't be able to brag to her sister without "looking like a bitch for having a bigger ring". FML

There's a difference between saying, "I love you, sweetheart!" in public and the spectacle that public proposals cause. Suddenly the proposee is surrounded by strangers who are hanging on their every word and ready to judge or comment if they say no. That's a lot of pressure and not cool if public proposals/marriage in general isn't something that hasn't been discussed. It's not that hard to feel out if your loved one is someone who's against or for public proposals BEFORE you get on one knee.

She didn't say she doesn't want to get married, for all the people saying she's not serious about him, just she wouldn't want the proposal in public. Saying that, jumping to conclusions like she did is also pretty ridiculous.

This is the official girlfriend test, when you start getting serious about her drop down to one knee and look for something in your pocket... Probably your phone. If she gets excited she might be a keeper... If not she does what OP's girlfriend did

If you try that shit when you "start" getting serious and she gets excited? Run the other way. Maybe after you've been serious for a while and had multiple discussions on whether you want to get married.
