Today, my college English teacher told me if I wanted an explanation for my grade I would have to schedule a conference to come to her office. It's an online class. I took an online class because I can't come in. FML

Same thing different taste
Unreasonable
Today, I've been making extremely good progress in my online class. Or at least… I was, until the deadline to complete it was suddenly pushed a whole month forward, causing me to be "behind." Then my teacher had the nerve to email me, telling me I needed to catch up. FML
Higher education
Today, after attending lectures for months, studying for weeks, and spending hours writing a 15-page research paper, I was informed that due to technological issues during registration, I was not enrolled in the class. FML
Lost and found
Today, I had to go meet my professor at 12. I wound up showing up almost an hour late. Why? Because she doesn't teach at the campus I registered at. I wound up having to visit TWO different campuses before I reached the right one. FML
Today, I got an e-mail from my seminar tutor asking why I wasn't in class. I was sitting next to him. FML
Computer says no
Today, I waited two hours in line at college to select my classes. I finally got to the desk, only to be told I have to apply online before I can show up in person. FML
Extenuating circumstances
Today, I found out that my professor dropped me from class because I missed a Zoom meeting. The only class I needed to graduate. Why did I miss the meeting? Because I was in labor for 32 hours. FML
Today, I received an email from my professor informing me that if I missed another class, I'd be dropped from the course. I have field experience to complete tomorrow as part of my major. I emailed her two weeks ago to let her know, and we're excused by the dean. She doesn't care. FML
Today, I drove to my college campus for my 8 a.m. class, parked, walked the mile and a half to my classroom, just to find out class had been cancelled. The prof didn't send an email because she couldn't remember her password. I paid $1200 to be taught by this woman, who has a doctorate. FML
Driven
Today, I drove 3 hours to get to a class, just to have the professor leave a note on the classroom door saying that she wasn't coming. FML
Today, I found out that I have to take a weekly workshop outside of class time all semester, and it's only offered on the day I have the most work hours. I barely make ends meet as it is, but the professor said to figure it out or fail. FML

The easy explanation for this is grade confidentiality. There is a Federal law called the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act which states that students' educational records are confidential. Most schools have a strict policy about not discussing grades over email because of this law.

True, but a lot of colleges have their own email through Outlook or some other service that is given to each student and teacher through the school. There is of course ways to identify email addresses in this system as actually one from the school. The formating for example is key to those emails. Then there is in most cases the @_____uniname______.edu labeling that you can't just get by yourself easily. Colleges that are drifting towards online classes could be expected to use that kind of system or some other form of online communication that acts as an identification as yourself so that the law doesn't stop communication between students taking online classes and professors.

Don't online classes have live-sessions? I know a few people who are able to video chat with their instructors. Any possibility??

Yeah. Skype it. Solves the problem as well as saves on gas and travel time.
MrConcise 34
Save OP gas and travel time? I'm guessing it would be closer to plane ticket or medical clearance.

My online teachers actually would all give me their skype in case I wanted to talk about something, but it felt so weird to me so I would prefer email or phone calls. But it is definitely possible.
ApollosMyth 22
Did you tell your proffesor that?
BlissfulLiss 18
I'm sure even if OP did, little ***** would be given. Otherwise the teacher wouldn't have put her in that position to begin with.
waffule365 16
Maybe you'll have to go in just this once.
BlissfulLiss 18
It's the principle of the thing. OP shouldn't have to do anything but email or call for an explanation. Hell, even Skype! As someone else suggested on here. But to go out of her way as her teacher expects her to...I mean what's going to happen in person that can't be done over the phone or through the Internet?
TheDrifter 23
Grades are strictly confidential by law. Discussing them where they might be overheard, or through an insecure communication is therefore illegal. So no Skype, email, letters etc. discussing how grades are awarded and who they are awarded to. OP really will have to go in, or send an approved representative (parent, significant other) to do it for them.

Why can't you go in? Fear of the outdoors? Wheelchair? Laziness? There are many reasons, but we know none of them.

Distance and time were my first thoughts, but maybe my fellow FML'ers have some more interesting ideas.

I'll take a crack at it... Work schedule? No transportation? Family/personal issues?
BlissfulLiss 18
Principle.
gracehi 31
Well, if you have to give an explanation for a poor grade, you don't have much room to stand on principle except in extraordinary circumstances, like say she lives 1000 miles away from the campus.
gracehi 31
Also, the professor likely wants OP to demonstrate that she cares about her grade, and will decide how willing she is to work with her based upon that demonstration. "Can't we talk about it over Skype?" doesn't demonstrate a willingness to put in effort towards her grade, whereas going out of her way to visit a campus she ordinarily wouldn't be able to would be a great demonstration of effort. But, like I said, this is all with the exception of extraordinary circumstances.
BlissfulLiss 18
Point taken.

Ooh.... I LOVE that game! ;) "Please, professor. I'll do anything to pass algebra... ANYTHING." "Anything?" *BOW CHICKA WOW WOW*
