Today, I awoke to the sound of a gunshot, followed by children screaming. I leapt out of bed and ran to my balcony, only to see people casually milling around the elementary school parking lot under a "Science Fair" banner. A kid's science experiment scared me shitless. FML

Thank you, but I wasn't brave. There's a tall picket fence and some trees obscuring the view of my apartment from the school. I can only see the school parking lot because I'm on the second story. The only reason someone would be able to see me from there would be if they were looking for me. I would have been quite safe, even if there had been any real danger. If there really was some lunatic shooting up the school, at the very least I would have called the cops. I'd like to think I would also grab my gun, head over there, and try to shoot the mother ****** myself, but you never really know what you'll do in a situation like that until it happens.

If you are an ex-veteran who seen combat you shouldn't feel embarrassed even if you ever got PTSD from other events if you are not a vet.

My neighbors have a potatoe launcher that sounds like a gun and scares me sometimes. Also one time while camping I heard a wolf then an elk ( sounded like a little girl screaming) and I could sleep that night I was so scared

I have. I had to fire guns at boot camp, and I carry a gun which I use for target practice.

why do you find it so hard to believe that a loud bang and people screaming wouldn't make someone think gun shot? especially seeing as it woke her from her sleep, I don't usually run through all scenarios when a loud noise wakes me, I assume the worst

Same happened to me as well. Today, my dad scared me shitless after rushing to me and being on the phone. His reaction seemed first worried and I thought something bad happened. Turns out he was excited that his team had scored 2 goals. Shit happens
