That sucks. That's happened to me a while back in different ways, not at dances neccesarily but picking partners for junior HS projects and stuff like that, it seemed atleast 50% of the time I was the odd man out. That being said, usually you bring that upon yourself by not mingling with people enough and not becoming part of the action..but after the damage is done you should have either left and found something to do, or gotten trashed and passed out on a table or something to cope with the embarassment, thats probably what I'd do :P
