Today, my husband of 3 weeks told me he doesn't want to be married anymore because I suggested getting a joint bank account. FML

Today, my husband got paid. I checked our bank account and was shocked to see we'd only received $300. I called him, insisting that there was some mistake. He said he'd started a new bank account in his name so he could manage our money on his own, and the $300 was my "allowance". I now want a divorce. FML

Honestly, it's overrated. My husband and I have been married almost five years and have never wanted or needed a joint account. We manage our finances just fine without it.

I don't think there would be anything wrong with having a single joint account for bills. Then you each could keep a personal account for personal use. Some people just don't want to have a joint account. My husband and I have one account but I know many people with multiple accounts.

That sucks. Should have been something you discussed before you got married though :(

My first husband cleaned out our account. My husband now didn't bat an eye when I told him no to one. We have a shared savings that our bills come out of and that's it. We work hard for our money so we do whatever we like with it as long as our needs are met first. If either of us needs wxtra we transfer back and forth. Much better system. So many people are way too good at lying. Having a joint account just leaves you open to be screwed over if the new spouse was able to hide money issues before. He probably went too far in saying he didn't want to be married anymore so FYL on that but if you were unreasonable and pushy about it then YDI.

Shouldn't you have discussed finances BEFORE marriage? Most couples I know get a joint back account before marriage. For joint bills, like rent, water, electricity, etc. Or you could have one joint account and two personal accounts

I feel like those types of things should be discussed BEFORE you get married..
