Today, my girlfriend and I were talking about times we'd made our mothers cry. She said she'd only made her mother cry once. When I asked when, she said, "When I told her I was thinking about dating you." FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Funny story…
Today, I met my girlfriend’s parents for the first time. I wanted to break the ice, so I brought up a funny story… about my ex-girlfriend, without thinking. The room fell silent, and my girlfriend’s mom just stared at me. My girlfriend left the room in tears. FML
Today, my girlfriend broke up with me because she heard me say "love you" on the phone. I was talking to my mom. FML
Awks
Today, my girlfriend's mom pulled me aside and started telling me about how her daughter was extremely depressed and suicidal before she met me, and how happy her family is because of me. I was planning on breaking up with her within the next week. FML
Today, my mom asked me if I was crying because my boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend. That wasn't why I was crying. My mom knows things before I do. FML
Today, I was at a restaurant with my kids. I told my 13 year old about how the very first time she said she loved me. She was 2 and it was at this very restaurant. I told her the details and even started tearing up a little. She didn't even look up from her cell phone and said, "That's fab, ma." FML
Today, I overheard my girlfriend telling her friend, "Actually, it's a good thing she died, she was quite a bitch." She was talking about my mother. FML
Close enough
Today, a friend of mine came to my house with tears in her eyes. I thought she was finally single so I could ask her out. Actually, her mother found out she was dating a girl, so she wants me to be her fake boyfriend as a cover-up. At least we're "dating" now. FML
Today, my girlfriend told me she wanted get to know my mom, so they went off and had a chat. After an hour, I noticed my girlfriend was gone and my mom was waiting for me. Apparently I've been dumped through my mother. FML
See someone
Today, my mom asked if I was seeing anyone. I launched into a description of my girlfriend, only for her to interrupt, saying that she meant a therapist, and the fact that I'd just made up a relationship was further proof that I needed one. I really do have a girlfriend. FML
Today, my mom showed my girlfriend a picture of me crying when I pooped in the bathtub. FML

All that matters is that your girlfriend wants to be with you, regardless what her mother thinks. That's true love right there!

I made my mom cry once. I was having a tantrum and managed to kick her in the thumb fracturing it. I felt awful. I also made my dad cry once. He had just taken me out for my first time driving, I was coming down our drive towards the garage. I must have been going too fast because he panicked yelling, "HIT THE BRAKES! HIT THE BRAKES!". Also panicking I hit the gas instead crashing through the closed garage door then hitting brakes. I sat there in silence whilst he let out a good cry.

That last story is hilarious in a really sad way! You must've felt awful! The whole image that story gave me is too funny. Your poor dad though, I wonder how much all those repairs cost.

He just had to replace the windshield, so I think it was more than he would have liked to, but not as much as it could have been. The garage door was actually pretty easy to fix, surprisingly, we worked together on that one. I definitely felt awful, I was pretty sure he'd never let me drive again. But even that didn't stop him from teaching me.

I feel you OP. My mom won't admit to hating my husband; she's perfectly nice when he's around, but when I was having normal wedding day jitters, she told me I didn't have to marry him. I know her well enough to see when she's just being polite. She thinks I'm too good for him. :/ As long as you two are happy, nothing else should matter.

this reminds me...my aunt told me that her mother (my gran) told her daughters, during their engagements, 'it is not a promise until the vows are complete.' An engagement ring is not a contract. Wedding arrangements are not a trap. You can still say no, up until the last second. As it happens, this particular aunt doesn't approve of her daughter's fiance, but she imparted this wisdom to me too, and I agree. Even if your mother had questionable intentions, what she said was true.

My sister in law got married to her now ex-husband, and the parents weren't thrilled with him. They got married and during the daddy-daughter dance her dad said "are you sure you've done the right thing and want to be married to him?" She said yes, but as things went on during the marriage he turned out to be a real bum and extremely selfish. She was working 2 jobs while he stayed home in his jammies all day and worked on his own business (which generated no money) and had the nerve to ask her to get another job even though he watched tv most of the day. He ended up leaving her. Turned out her parents saw what she couldn't see at the time. Sometimes the parents are right in these situations and can see something that we're blind too. Other times they're just wrong and are pushing they're own hang ups with the person onto you and your relationship. Hope it's the latter for you op.
