Today, my boyfriend woke up wheezing terribly, aching, and sneezing. He's allergic to cats. I have 2 and they are my babies. He gave me an ultimatum, him or the cats. I haven't figured out how I'm going to tell him that I choose the cats. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, my boyfriend bought us three kittens. Today, I also discovered that I am allergic to cats. My boyfriend broke up with me because he wanted the cats more than me. FML
Today, I went to the doctor to find out why I've been feeling so sick the past several weeks. Turns out, I'm severely allergic to the cat of my girlfriend of two years. I told her "It's me or the cat." She chose the cat. FML
Don't make me choose
Today, after being diagnosed with cat allergies, I explained to my cat-loving boyfriend that the doctor strongly recommended not allowing the cat in the bedroom. At 1:30 a.m. my boyfriend got out of the bed to go sleep in the spare room because, "the cat is sad." FML
Dumbest Ultimatum Ever
Today, my boyfriend told me I had to get rid of my cats, or he would leave. He punched a hole in my wall when I told him I chose the cats. FML
Itchy and scratchy
Today, I went to meet my boyfriend's parents for the first time. While I was there, I started to get really itchy. Turns out they have 5 cats. Guess what I'm allergic to? FML
Today, I told my mom I'm severely allergic to my cat and that the doctor told me it would be best to get rid of the cat. Somewhat jokingly, I told her it was either me or the cat. She chose the cat. She was serious too. FML
Cats rule, boys drool
Today, to celebrate moving into a new apartment, my girlfriend decided she would get a kitten. She didn't know I'm allergic to cats. When I told her, she decided that she couldn't date someone who couldn't be around her cat; the one she doesn't have yet. FML
Today, I discovered that my son has an allergy to cats. My partner of two years, not wanting to fight, suggested a compromise: that my son and the cat take turns sleeping outside. FML
Summer vibes
Today, my roommates adopted two kittens without consulting me. We're not allowed to have pets in our apartment and I'm severely allergic to cats. Oh well, it's not like I needed to be able to breathe this summer. FML
Today, I bought a kitten. I've wanted a cat for years and decided to finally buy one now that I have my own apartment. It turns out I'm allergic to cats. FML

Bravo for keeping your cats! It's nice to see at least one person who won't dump them just because their bf is allergic.

How long did you have this boyfriend , that he's waking up next to you, but didnt know you had TWO cats? People with allergies tell significant others about them, and they are also very careful so as not to get an attack. (IE going into someone elses house and looking/asking if theres a cat, or looking at labels on food if you have food allergies) Because if they are your "babies" you definately would have said something about them, I have animals, and they are one of the first things I talk about. And its not your fault if you don't like/love him enough to give up something that will love you, and be with you for years to come.

Well, maybe it was his first night sleeping over, and being around the cats so long took its toll.

I think it probably got worse because he stayed overnight. When I was first dating my husband, he knew he was allergic to cats, but hadn't ever spent more than a few hours with one. When we went to spend the night at my parents' house, they closed off the room he would be sleeping in, cleaned it up carefully, and put freshly washed sheets on the bed- but he still woke up in the morning with worse allergy symptoms than he had ever experienced. My parents aren't slobs or anything, but cat dander just gets everywhere. Even with allergy medicine and sleeping in a room that the cats are never allowed in, my husband always suffers when we go to my parents' house. It's not intolerable for a few days, but if the cats were allowed to sleep in the bed with him, I think it would be. OP that's a really tough situation, and I hope the next man you fall in love with loves cats too! (or at least isn't allergic)

Maybe he didn't realize he was allergic to cats. It's possible, but if that were the case, he might have at least suggested using allergy medication. If that didn't work, then they'd have to talk about it. It's unfair of him to just expect her to give up her cats because he's allergic to them. He sounds just a little bit selfish.

What I don't understand is how he came to be spending the night when surely he knew you had cats? Or did you just not tell him because you knew he'd make you choose? What's going on there?

FHL. It's not like it's a dog.

Only people who don't have pets are talking shit OP. Your kitties are WAY more important. They depend on you and were probably there before the boyfriend. You can't just give them away or drop them off at some shelter just because he won't take benadryl.

You know benedryl doesn't do a whole lot, some people have different levels of reactions. I would be in the ER within 30 minutes of being stuck around a cat, with or without benedryl. I'd give anything to have that magic medicine that you all think exists to prevent allergies. The OP is a bitch end of story. He cared enough about her to ask her to remove the one hinderance in their relationship so he could actually live AND spend time with her.

He gave her an ultimatum, which is something only assholes do. Besides, who says the boyfriend is guaranteed to be with her for the rest of his life? If she didn't choose the cats, he could dump her anyway and she wouldn't have any companionship.

Sooner or later, the OP will post another one: "A while ago, I chose my cats over a really great guy. Too bad the guys I've met since then don't care if I have cats, because they aren't interested in long-term relationships, anyway. FML"

Why so many YDI?? She has some cats, so now she is responsible for them. It pisses me off when people abandon their animals because they "have other plans now". Well you adopted animals, for the rest of their lives, not until yours is better. So FYL op. But if it's only a problem now, then she mustn't have been with this guy for very long.

They're your "babies"?! Oh dear goodness.

Just to clarify for all of the people that have down-voted my comment...I have nothing against cats! They're great, I've had a cat for many years and may have chosen the cat over the boyfriend as well. I just find it strange when people call their pets their "babies"...

nerds, if you think that's weird, I must be a psycho since I call my ferrets my ferrapists :D
euclid 0
no, that's hilarious. I would do that do if I thought better about ferrets. and I can understand her calling them her "babies", if that's a nickname. but if she seriously puts them on the dame level as human babies, I find that a little more than odd.
