Today, I went to the salon to get my extremely curly hair cut for the first time in years. Apparently, "just trim the dead ends" and "give me an afro" mean the same thing to a barber. FML

Today, I went to a different barber because my usual one was on vacation. I told him I wanted a slight trim, nothing drastic. Apparently, "slight trim" means shaving half of my head and giving me bangs that would make a medieval monk jealous. Now, I look like a confusing fashion experiment from the '80s. The 1880s. FML
Today, I went to my hair dresser to get my haircut. When she asked me what I wanted, I told her "the usual". She confused me with another customer and gave me a mullet. FML
Today, I let a friend cut my hair. I soon went from having a 'fro to looking like I lost a fight with a lawn mower. FML
Today, I got a haircut. I wanted three inches cut off. When the lady finished, she had cut off everything but three inches of my hair. FML
Today, after a year and a half of growing out my hair, I decided to get it trimmed at a Superclips. I walked in with a full head of hair and I left bald. At least it was free. FML
Today, I went to a new hair salon that has just opened down my street. I asked them for a trim and a little bit of layering, just to keep things smart and professional. I walked out looking like a cross between a pineapple and a mop. Of course, as is often the case after a bad haircut, I have a job interview in two hours. FML
Today, I thought I would treat myself to a shave and a haircut at a proper barber, instead of just a haircut at Supercuts. After many "Oops", "Sorry", even an "Oh dear", I left with no hair cut, and blood streaming from multiple slices in my face from the shave. I think one might need stitches. FML
Today, I went to my hairdresser who promised me a haircut which "all the girls would want you" for. She gave me a combover. FML
Today, I went to get a haircut and the first thing the lady asked was, "So, do you want to keep the mullet?" What mullet?! FML
Today, I went to the hair salon to get a fresh trim before receiving my master's diploma. The hairdresser managed to shave off half my eyebrow. FML

Sometimes more of your hair is dead than you think, and a lot needs to be cut in order to let it grow healthily. Even if it's shorter than you'd wanted, at least it's not stuck that way forever. :)

Sometimes more of your hair is dead than you think, and a lot needs to be cut in order to let it grow healthily. Even if it's shorter than you'd wanted, at least it's not stuck that way forever. :)

My father was a barber and technically anything beyond the actual hair folicle is "dead" anyway, because the hair doesn't grow itself it grows from the folicle

As a fellow curly haired, ALWAYS get recommendations!! I've been with the same hairdresser for 12.5 years now. It also could be that more hair was damaged than you thought. It'll grow back, OP!

For future sake, getting a trim once/twice a year will prevent a surprisingly short haircut.

At least the afro can be converted to something else, like shaved sides and curly top or the Vanilla Ice haircut. Unfortunately, it can also be converted to a mushroom haircut.

Dead ends is literally anything after 2 inches off your scalp. Trim the SPLIT ends is what you were trying to asking for.
