Today, I went into hysterics and started crying when my boyfriend pulled out a Tiffany's box at dinner. Then I found out he'd used the old box to make the $15 earrings he bought seem more "special." FML
Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my boyfriend went into great detail over the Tiffany's jewelry he painstakingly selected for his previous girlfriends on their birthday. I got hand towels. In powder blue. From Target. FML
Broke boy
Today, I went to Tiffany's to exchange a bracelet my boyfriend had given me for our year anniversary. It was the first gift that he actually spent money on me for. The sales lady then told me that the bracelet was not a real Tiffany's item. FML
Today, I opened some small cute birthday gifts at my boyfriend's house. As we left to go out, he slipped me a Tiffany box and said he wanted me to open it in private. Flushed and excited, I open it to find a Ziploc bag filled with hair. It was thd mustache I'd been begging him to shave for months. FML
For better, for worse
Today, my boyfriend and I went shopping for an engagement ring. We ended up breaking up in the process. FML
Today, I bought my girlfriend a very expensive necklace. I gave it to her thinking she'd be extremely happy. Instead she was mad at me because my gift for our anniversary was better than hers. FML
Today, my boyfriend gave me a fancy chocolate candy and I got angry at him for forgetting that I'm allergic to chocolate and threw the candy into the garbage disposal. Turns out, he had spent a ton of money getting a chocolatier to put an engagement ring inside the candy that I just destroyed. FML
Take it seriously!
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend with a ring from Kay Jewelers. She saw the box, started giggling, whispered, "'Kay", and then started laughing so hard at her joke she had to excuse herself. FML
Today, my boyfriend bought me a beautiful pair of very expensive diamond earrings, along with a card that read, "To my beautiful brown eyed Princess." My ears aren't pierced, and my eyes are green. FML
Today, my boyfriend told me he'd drive me to the jeweler's to pick out a ring. We drove there, I picked the ring, and the sales person rang it up. I glanced at my boyfriend, only for him to reply, "Well don't look at me!" FML
Mixed signals
Today, my boyfriend took me out to a fancy dinner. Halfway through, he said he wanted to break up. I started crying, but the whole restaurant thought he'd proposed, and started clapping. FML

Time to put N'oreos in his Oreo box and see how he feels. Or skim milk in his whole milk carton.

Or how about appreciating what you receive and not being ungrateful?! People these days I tell ya

My boyfriend bought me a rose while we were stopped at a gas station and I was freakin' ecstatic. Be thankful he actually got you something and thought of you.

No shit!!!! I totally agree!!!!!

My standards aren't low; I just appreciate a nice gesture. It's nice to have someone that actually thinks of you and cares about you. I wish more people would appreciate little things. Little things are important.

What? You ******* bitches deserve $800 presents just because your girls? Get over yourself. I bet you've done nothing for your boyfriend.

I'm talking to the standards girl btw.

This gesture means nothing now. **** men. </3

It worked, didn't it? Oddly enough, he got the real gift: For $15, he found out what a materialistic, greedy gold-digger you really are. I hope he uses this knowledge wisely.

OMG You described OP perfectly. So glad another can see how very shallow s person can be when presented with a gift
DocBastard 40
Too many people are going to say "At least he bought you something. Don't be an ungrateful bitch!" The truth is that if you were in that situation, you bitch about it too. What the boyfriend did here is asinine at best, borderline fraudulent at worst. Everyone knows the Tiffany's box and assumes it has Tiffany's stuff in it. This is like buying a Cadillac and finding out that just the body is a Cadillac but the car itself is a Dodge Neon.

Doc, you said it perfectly. I'm sure OP would've been perfectly happy if the earrings were packaged in a non-deceitful way. She was probably just disappointed because the Tiffany brand has things like longevity of a relationship and the strength of love attached to it, so she was hoping for a piece of jewelry that stated a commitment. Tiffany is after all considered only second to diamonds by a lot of women in terms of romantic jewelry gifts. I'm sure very few of you would be calling OP a bitch if it had been diamond jewelry that turned out to be cubic zarconia.
ImaginaryFoe 1
Even if they had been Tiffany's earrings, she may have been disappointed. She was expecting an engagement ring, not earrings of any price. It sounds like he used the Tiffany's box to compensate for the low-priced gift. OP, you and your bf are clearly not in the same place. "I think we need to have a talk." Best of luck to the both of you.

31 - Regardless of whether it's a diamond or cubic zirconia, I'd still think the OP was being whiny. Just because the Tiffany's brand is associated with long lasting, loving relationships it doesn't negate the fact that you can be given something else to symbolise it your relationship. It doesn't have to be a piece from Tiffany's to 'state a commitment'. I can understand the OP's disappointment at her boyfriend being slightly deceitful, but if her only issue is in not finding diamonds in the Tiffany's box, then she's a materialistic bitch.

OP's name is "noringforme"...that's a big hint that she was expecting one.

I'm going to get thumbed down for disagreeing with the Almighty Doc, but no. I actually would not bitch about it if I were in this situation. Hard to believe, but the name Tiffany's means absolutely nothing to me.
DocBastard 40
Elletex - Your opinion is just as valid as mine, so no thumbs down are deserved, I assure you. But if you were duped like OP, you'd be pissed too. She says he used that box to make the inexpensive earrings seem more special. That's deceptive and nothing less. If he wants to give her cheap things, great. But putting cheap jewelry in a Tiffany box is a flat-out lie.

61 - The name "NoRingForMe" may have something to do with it.
AcieMcG 21
I just thumbed you up to even you out with Perdix.
SammyS2012 21
Yes it was deceitful, but in that situation, I wouldn't whine about it. I would actually appreciate the gesture more if cheap jewlery was placed in a pretty box like Tiffany's. To me, it would be more like, "I can't afford to give you expensive jewlery like Tiffany's, but it's what you deserve." Heck, I don't care if my engagement ring turn out to be $20; as long as it doesn't turn my finger green and it looks gold (because I like color on jewlery). I've always thought that it's the feelings that are more important in an egangement; not the ring.
SammyS2012 21
Well, it doesn't even have to look gold. As long as it doesn't turn my finger green... That's all I care about.

I would have to say though she should be grateful. I dated a guy for a year and a half and he complained about even buying me 50 cent guacamole at a Mexican restaurant. Sadly that wasn't my first encounter with a guy like that and she got lucky enough to get a guy who wanted to not only buy her something but make it seem special.
GirlOnFire143 6
Appreciate it, OP! Maybe next time he pulls out a box you'll cry happy tears.
Isajotun 3
He could have easily spent that money on some booze, but instead he thought of you... YDI

Never assume something...just be happy and thankful he bought you something:)

Your boyfriend sounds sweet. I realize that it'd be disappointing to see that you didn't actually receive Tiffany earrings, but for some reason it seems cute that he tried to make the gift more special. I just can't get the image out of my head of a guy looking at his girl with puppy dog eyes, hoping his lady will like the gift.
Dracoboxer357 36
27- And I'm the optimist? Your version of how it appeared with puppy dog eyes and all is kinda cute. ;) I just can't decide why he bothered using a Tiffany box, as I don't see a good outcome of showing her gold and giving her lead (so to speak.)
Dracoboxer357 36
^ (Went to add more, time ran out on edit) IMHO, he should have just used the box it came in. She'd be happy without the extra expectations and he'd be happy she appreciated his gift.
unknown_user5566 27
Draco, I'm an optimist sometimes too. Just depends on my mood. ;) I agree with you that OP would have probably been more appreciative without the Tiffany box expectation- for whatever reason I came to the conclusion that the boyfriend was honestly just unaware of the expectation he was setting. :)
br0ccoli 15
The question is: Where is the stuff from the original box? And she's not ungrateful or a gold digger. How would you feel if your boss set everything up to seem as if you were a getting a huge promotion and then you find out that you got a $0.01/hr increase? Big lead-on, big letdown.

It's said "it's the thought that counts" BUT not in this case.
