Today, I went driving for the first time with my mom. When she wasn't screaming, she gave great advice like, "Stop at the red light" and "Don't crash into cars". I need to drive 50 hours with her. FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, my mother said she trusted me enough to go with me for my first drive in my new car. As soon as we got in the car, she started hyperventilating and screaming we're going to crash. I didn't even start the engine. FML
Stress test
Today, while driving on the streets for the first time, my mom decided that it would be an appropriate time to yell at me for every single mistake I’ve ever made in my life. This stressed me out so much I began driving against traffic. FML
Today, I got my first driving lesson from my dad. We traded seats, I started the car and his entire lesson was, "Go." FML
Today, my mom once again yelled at me for "driving erratically." She texts while driving 70 miles per hour on the highway, but apparently driving through a yellow light is "reckless." FML
Today, while in the car with my mom, she gave me a lecture about how bad of a driver I am. During that process she ran a red light and hit a car. FML
Predictions
Today, I spent hours arguing with my mother, who claimed I shouldn't make a three-hour drive because I wouldn't be able to concentrate for that long. I argued that I was a perfectly capable driver, and left. In the last two minutes of the journey, I hit a van, and messed up the front of my car. FML
Today, I just bought a car with all of my own money. Then, when I brought it home my dad informed me that my mom will be driving it to work every day. FML
Today, I told my mom about the severe phobia I've developed towards driving. She was very supportive and even made me an appointment to see a psychologist. His office is two hours away. I have to drive to see my doctor about my fear of driving. FML
Today, I took my driving test for the first time. The instructor stopped it after less than ten minutes, and insisted she drive back to the test centre "in the interest of public safety." FML
Today, I took my 15 year-old daughter driving. I yelled at her for not going safely around corners. On the way home, while demonstrating how to drive right, I went around a corner and hit a cement truck. FML

To everybody saying that this is stressful for the mom, remember your first time driving. Her mother screaming does not make the stress any better.

It's more stressful for the first time driver than for the passenger who is supposed to be calmly teaching them.

My mom also freaked out way too much when I first started driving. It made me so nervous that I didn't even want to continue sometimes.

This sounds just like my dad, he was constantly freaking out about what I did wrong without providing help or telling me when I did anything right.

This is why it took me so long to get my license. My mom is a panicky person. I barely used my learner's permit for a while because she always made me nervous. My dad wasn't much better. It wasn't until my grandfather, who had a lot of experience teaching teens to drive and could stay totally calm, stepped in to teach me that I actually learned. If you can't be calm and helpful when teaching a teen to drive, I would suggest Driver's Ed or finding someone else, because your nerves ain't helping the new driver's.

She'll be great for your road confidence! Any way you can ask another family member or can you afford an instructor?

The obvious sarcasm flew way over people's heads.

In Mom's defense, "don't crash into cars" truly is excellent driving advice. I've seen far too many people on the road whose moms obviously never taught them this.

My dad is the same exact way.

Although I agree, according to statistics deaf people are better drivers than non dead people. Don't believe me? Google.
brand125 17
25 - but deaf people are trained to use their other senses more and are use to it, so your study doesnt apply to regular non deaf people.

No effing shit, dead people can't drive- I hope you never drive...

Yeah, all one person saying that at the time of this posting. Not that you're wrong, but seriously? That's what the reply button is for.

The first time I got into the drivers seat, my mom did the sign of the cross
Adeptus_Astartes 22
@22 You mean the father, son, and holy spirit. A lot of people call it the "chest cross thing," but that's not what it is.
noelsom7 13
@48 Actually it is called making the sign of the cross, but when you do it you say "in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Tell your mother to get out the car if she is going to distract you...

In many places in the US, before obtaining a driver's license, you need X hours of driving experience with a permit, which you can only do with an adult "instructor." Even without reading this FML it's safe to assume that the heavily populated and relatively liberal CA would have such a regulation

I remember my mom did the same thing. Don't blame her she's probably nervous and scared because you're growing up.

Guess you're driving with Captain Obvious.

Reminds me a little of driving with Dad. He panicked whenever I moved an inch to the left or right in the lane, though admittedly he does that if anyone but him is behind the wheel. Driving 50 hours with your kid is rather nerve-wrecking.
