Today, I learned to check inside the oven before you preheat it. Sometimes children hide their pet rabbit in there. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, after 30 minutes of pre-heating the oven to make a special meatloaf for my husband's birthday, I remembered that I had hidden the cake in there. FML
Today, I learned where my mom's "special hiding spot" that I'll "never find" for the Halloween chocolate is, when I preheated the oven to make cookies. FML
Science has gone too far
Today, I watched our very clever cat turn on our oven with ease. I now fear for my children's lives. FML
Fire hazard
Today, I was trying to cook a pizza for lunch at my in-laws. I preheated the oven and took my dog out to go potty. I come back in to find the house filled with smoke, the detector going off, and a fire in the oven. Apparently, my mother-in-law left a tray of glass candle holders in it. FML
Today, while house sitting, I went to take my pizza out of the oven, not realizing that the oven mitt had a hole in it. FML
Poor Despereaux
Today, I baked a cake. After feeding it to my entire family, I opened the stove, planning to temporarily store the cake inside. I then noticed a mouse, burnt to a crisp. FML
Safety test
Today, I learned how to use a fire extinguisher. Too bad it was on my brand new oven. FML
Today, my 8-year-old son microwaved his pet hamster. FML
Cooking with Anon
Today, after meaning to do so for a while, I began cleaning my oven. I sprayed it with the foam cleaner stuff, closed the oven for the foam to soak in, then forgot about the whole thing. Later, I preheated the oven for a pizza and triggered a smoke alarm, which brought the fire department to my door. No pizza, just shame. FML
Today, I found out you really can burn down a kitchen by boiling an egg. FML

That's what I thought, too. We've got 1. Boiled rabbit 2. Baked rabbit We ought to round out the trilogy with a nice Southern version featuring Deep-Fried Rabbit.

YDI, basic rule of the kitchen is to check the oven before you preheat. (IE. Make sure racks are in place, extract any pans ect...) I hope this is fake or FML just found Oklahoma's village idiot.

I rarely ever check the inside of my oven before preheating it. The basic rule of the kitchen in my house is that if you cook something, you clean it up (put dishes in the sink, put racks back if you took them out for some reason, etc).

I agree

I'm going to go ahead and say not everyone always checks their oven before they preheat. I don't. But I also don't have kids or rabbits.

What a horrible death.

Why would you need to check it? It's not like she was EXPECTING the rabbit to be in there. I know I certainly don't check the oven. And I wouldn't consider it a "basic rule" either.

Whenever I cook I check the oven to fix the racks and take out pans that may have been left there. Also, if you have a young child, you should check it regardless since anything can be a prime hiding spot in his or her mind's eye. AKA. Common sense.
rachelarr 0
Um, how about COMMON SENSE: Don't leave shit in the oven. Why would you leave pans in there? An oven is not a cupboard.

well if i was ever in an oven i would push open the door and get out, YDI bunny for not saving your own cotton tailed ass!! seriously, give her a break, it isnt like she plan on it. things to do: 1) do dishes 2) pick up dry cleaning 3) bake my childs pet to death if there arent usually things in your oven, you would have no reason to check it. 99 percent of the time bunnies dont dwell in ovens. get over yourselves.

Take your own advice and get over yourself, #196: If she were a responsible parent and NOT an idiot, she would have checked it. She has multiple young children, and she should have known that children hide anything anywhere. I've seen children stash things in the microwave, refrigerator, in the toaster, and yes, even the oven. Obviously no one would expect to find their pet bunny in the oven, but she should have known to check for crayons or Tonka trucks at least.

Just because your children put random stuff in places they dont belong doesnt mean everyone elses usually do. Checking the oven for every little thing isnt something that automatically comes for most parents and so far no parent I have asked does this, Because again What the hell would you be checking for? Just because The OP isnt as meticulous as you or doesnt have habitually stupid acting children doesnt make her an idiot or a bad parent.
gummibehrs 4
Oh, but it does. Case closed. Now, kindly shut up.
Thunderbender 2
True, but most people dont leave pans and stuff inside the over. Can you honestly say you would have naturllary grown into the checking the oven routine if you you didnt usually have stuff like that to check for?
_volcom_ 3
common rule: dont leave pans and shit in the oven after you turn it off. also..... i usually adjust the racks after it preheats as i am putting whatever in the oven, with oven mits, but i dont usually need to adjust the racks..... so fail on your part.
justanotheruser 0
Well, uh, you kind of deserved it. Because when you have a pet and a young child, or just one of them, you have to make sure that it is okay to turn anything on because they can just wonder in there. Too bad you had to learn the hard way.

If it's a gas oven, you should have it open at least a little bit when you are lighting it anyway.
claritin 0
Child, okay, I'll give you that, but I don't see how a rabbit could wander into the oven by itself...
_volcom_ 3
Well duh.... I always check my blender before i turn it on... in case my kid or a bunny is hiding in there you know..... in all seriousness, you cant prevent EVERYTHING. What people arent getting is that most of these fml's can happen to anyone, thats why there are SO MANY! A lot of people read these and automatically think oh i could prevent that...they deserved it. You cant prepare for something you arent expecting... Who the hell would think that their kid would put their rabbit in the oven if it never happened before? Only the child knows...maybe they were playing hide and seek with the bunny? I say fyl, op. Kids do the darnest things, for the most part in inocent curiosity, and sometimes they can do a lot of damage. Dont blame yourself for the loss, the rabit probably died painlessly from the intense heat and loss of oxygen once it got hot enough.

Are you deaf? Did you think the thumps and scrabbling noises were only the rats again? Y'all are too stupid to own animals. PETA needs to do an intervention on your ass.

Maybe the OP actually noticed the rabbit at once and removed it from the oven before harming it (or just some comfortable warmth), but writes it in this way so that the FML is funnier than "Today I almost cooked my son's pet rabbit but everything's fine. Almost FML".
