The wagon
Today, after much coaxing, I finally got my roommate to loosen up and have a couple of beers with me and my friends. It was only later in the evening that he admitted the real reason he hadn't wanted to drink: he's an alcoholic and had been sober for six months, until now. FML

Not only is this why 'no means no', but it's also why living with some one who doesn't really know you often ends poorly. Hopefully OP's roommate will be able to recover from this relapse.

Thanks OP, I had hope in humanity today...you taught me why I shouldn't always be so hopeful...didn't your parents teach YOU about peer pressure?

You think he would have said something before drinking.

See the thing is, OP uses words like "coaxing" and "loosening up" to show that he felt justified in his actions. In reality, he thought his roomie was being a pretentious jerk by not drinking with them. Instead OP found out his roommate was a former alcoholic, who he just alcohol too. No one who has ever been an alcoholic would admit to it. Saying he lacks communications skills shows you lack sensitivity towards others' lives. Sure his roomie had a choice, but when was the last time you heard a diabetic refuse a candy bar they were given? Or the last time a child with a cavity refused to eat more Sweet Tarts? OP should feel bad, and he needs to make it up to his roommate...FML is not a way to do that.

Guess you should learn to get to know the people you live with. You're lucky he wasn't an axe murderer. He was unlucky in having you for a roommate since you couldn't take time to get to know him.

You shouldn't make assumptions, it sounds like his roommate was trying to hide this from them, so it's not really his fault. You say they should have taken the time to get to know him but this is exactly what they were trying to do by going out and having some beers. The op obviously feels bad about what happened or else he wouldn't have made this FML.

How are you people blaming the OP for this? The room mate chose to go out and drink. He could have gone out with them and not had any alcohol, or insisted on staying home. Why didn't he just TELL OP why he didn't want to have a beer? Sounds like the OP was just trying to be nice. There's no way he could have known if the room mate won't communicate.

Six months isn't that long so he definitely should've said something. Personally, I'd say its not your fault.

I think it's completely the roommates fault. If he is that weak that he gives in to peer pressure, and that cowardly he won't even tell his ROOMMATE - his roommate, not some stranger on the street - of his past problems, then the roommate totally deserves it. I'm sure OP would have been accepting of this if the roommate just told them, and probably would have wanted to help with the problem. You did nothing wrong OP, it's completely the roommates fault for not having the balls to speak up in the first place.

what, did he stutter when he said no? or do you need to clean your ears out?
