The wagon
Today, after much coaxing, I finally got my roommate to loosen up and have a couple of beers with me and my friends. It was only later in the evening that he admitted the real reason he hadn't wanted to drink: he's an alcoholic and had been sober for six months, until now. FML

Never try and force people to do something they don't want!

YDI for not respecting his choices and breaking his will. You should feel ******* awful for this. Also, you may need help yourself if you think you can only "loosen up" with booze.

It's not the OP's fault because the roommate did not say that he was an alcoholic and in the end it was the roomate's choice to drink it

So what you're basically saying OP is that if someone doesn't drink, they must be uptight, and that the only way for people to be cool is to drink? YDI.

I feel really bad for you OP. You did a good thing and it's really unfortunate that things turned out the way they did. I'm sorry that everyone's labeling you some kind of pressuring douchebag, but I really think you did the right thing, and I hope you'd do the same in the future.

Why would you 'coax' someone into drinking in the first place? I can tell you didn't mean anything by it, but even if he wasn't a recovered alcoholic, it's still out of order to put pressure on him... for all you knew, he might just have not been into drinking, or he might have had some kind of bad experience with it in the past. Don't pressure people into doing shit. It's always going to end badly.

I can't really blame the op here. Had the other just admitted they were a recovering alcoholic from the get go than this could have been avoided. I doubt op meant any harm since quite a few people loosen up over a beer or so. I await your thumbs down for the unpopular input.

Why would you pressure someone to drink if they didn't want to in the first place? Are you 15? However I have a hard time with this because they are responsible for themselves and alcohol will always be around.
