You could have turned his logic back at him and raged at him for should of knowing that you were driving when he sent that text, unsafe. (Again, I know that doesn't make sense but neither does his logic)

Sounds to me like the boyfriend sent the text, waited 20 seconds, and when he didn't get an immediate reply he forgot about it and went off to find something else to amuse himself. Then when the mother saw the reply, he was annoyed at himself for doing something stupid but didn't want to admit it, so he blamed his girlfriend with a lame excuse. If this is the case, your boyfriend is a dumbass, OP.
