Man or woman?

Today, while getting my hair done, I was annoyed that the beautician was not paying attention while straightening my hair. After asking her three times to watch what she was doing, I grabbed the iron and said "let me do it, you're going to burn me!". I then burned two layers of skin off my ear. FML

How much attention does it require to hold something and slowly pull down?

#1 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:03am by whatwhat

Hairdressers don't usually use irons to straighten hair, thats a bit unusual to start with. My hairdresser never has anyway.

#2 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:06am by amelinat

#3 FTW! And also, HA! And IN YOUR FACE! and and and FOURTH! :)

Well at least you got your nick spot on. YDI

#5 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:15am by shiie

Why would you do that? Don't be a bitch. YDI.

#6 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:17am by LMFAOsabrina

Oww.
Well..I know you didnt want to get your hair ruined at the salon but you didnt have to freak out, she probably knew what she was doing.
D: Sorry, but you deserved it.

#7 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:20am by hk

#2 I think she means a straightener, not an iron, but this website is American I think. That's probably what they call them there. You're probably Australian and we call them straighteners.

Also, she probably was paying attention but just talking to someone or something at the same time.
Hairdressers aren't usually that stupid to not pay attention. If someone complains they can probably get fired.

DIY? YDI?

and #8, it was a port of a French site, so, neither American nor Australian.

You deserve it for being a brat.

#11 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:31am by SpunkT

shes a professional, she knew what she was doing.
are you saying you can do your hair better that someone who does hair for a living?

#12 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:31am by 3ree

YDI. If I was her, I woulda burned you deliberately anyway to shut you the fuck up.

#13 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:33am by trynightday

YDI. The beautician was most likely a professional who had done it many, many times before and knew exactly what she was doing.

#14 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:36am by DeeJayD

YDI...you should have let her fuck it up, then not pay for it, or at least not pay for the entire thing. Maybe you should get your own damn straightner and do it yourself next time? Wait..since you obviosuly don't know what YOU'RE doing, you might burn your nose off or something.

#15 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:43am by Stay_beautiful

there is irony in this one

am i right?

#16 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:44am by pwnrzero

That's what you get for being a controlling bitch. YDI.

And my hairdresser uses straighteners all the time.

#17 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:50am by imajinethat

Well don't be a bitch, YDI.

#18 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:58am by KrystleLynn

You deserved it for being a bitch and telling someone how to do their job. Karma. Get used to it.

#19 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:05am by Altrown

Haha YDI!! I work at a hair salon. I freakin hate it when people do this to me. It drives me nuts!!

#20 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:06am by Shiningstartp

the person doing ur hair is called a HAIRDRESSER not a beautician.............beauticians wax hair off ppl not fix the hair on your head!!!

#21 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:10am by melovesit

YDI, We Know What We're DOING.
We don't have to look constantly.
I promise she wouldn't have burned you, but consitering you did it yourself.
YFDI

#22 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:11am by lucie

i bet that hairdresser felt so satisfied when you burnt yourself...i know i would after someone was a bitch like that to me

#23 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:34am by c_R_07

straightener = flat iron
both are right.
and really? do it yourself? then why go to the salon in the first place. way to be a brat.

#25 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:42am by ivdrscg

So ironic. lolol but yeah, you deserved it.

#26 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:45am by ibooyou

Umyeah, you definitely deserved that. I'm sure she wouldn't have burned you but like someone else said, I would have done it on purpose.

#27 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:50am by Atropos

That sucks, I hate when the person is too busy yapping on the phone or to her coworkers to pay attention to you. I had a hairdresser like that. Once. I gave her a small tip and never went back. Now the new one I found is great.
Sucks for your ear though! Hope it heals quick and that you find a decent salon to go to.

For all the people saying she's a controlling bitch... HELLO, it's HER hair, she has every right to have control over what's done to it! Hairdressers are people too and they can suck at their job just like anybody else...

#28 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:51am by ammali

I agree with #28. I mean, sure, she shouldn't have grabbed the iron and tried to do it herself, but the hairdresser should've been paying attention in the first place. The OP clearly states that she asked THREE times, and while the hairdresser may have been the best at her job, or be capable of doing any work blindfolded-- or not, there's always that-- she was asked by a customer to do something. It's her job to follow. Least she could have done was put the customer at ease. I personally hate it when people yap over my head like I'm a doll.

#29 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:59am by arabesc

wow. you're a bitch.

#30 - On 04/08/2009 at 7:59am by rebelchild

Definitely YDI. Your hairdresser has probably done that a thousand times and could do it in her sleep. Unless she's being extremely reckless or something like that, you're most likely not going to get hurt. Well, that is, unless you start being a grabby control freak. Funny how that worked out.

#31 - On 04/08/2009 at 8:00am by Chibi

sheesh don't freak on her straining ur hair really doesn't need tht much attention. . . #31 is soo right. . .

#32 - On 04/08/2009 at 8:15am by moosey1234

LOL #16.

Why bother going to your "beautician" if you felt you could have done a better job? YDI.

#33 - On 04/08/2009 at 8:41am by vynns

you kinda deserved that one.

#34 - On 04/08/2009 at 8:43am by brooke3

#35 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:01am by sprinkesrdelish

you should watch "untamed heart" with marisa tomei and christian slater. you're like the rude chick that marisa tomei bugs out on in the salon hahaha

#36 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:02am by mrcarmine

Serves you right... im a hairstylist and if you where my client i would have laughed at you. your just high matence/ "princess". she probably had zero patience left with you and just wanted to get your out of her chair as fast as she could.

#37 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:12am by Jka

#37

It's called high MAINTENANCE...

And would probably have done the same thing as the OP...I hate when my hairstylist does not pay attention to what she is doing. I've had my ear burned and scratched before and once she almost stabbed me in the eye because she was too busy chit-chatting with her colleague...it was ridiculous...

It doesn't matter if you're a good hairstylist or not...the OP asked her 3 times to pay more attention and probably not just for the hell of it, but because her hairsylist got pretty damn close to burning her ear. What her hairstylist was doing is called bad customer service...

#38 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:20am by Puolukka

YDI for thinking you can do other people's jobs better than they can. Talk about self absorbed!

#39 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:25am by crowdish

You're a bitch. YDI.

#40 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:26am by Carribu

LMAO! you deserved it. Most hairstylist's go to cosmetology school or have intense on the job training. I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing. It's not as easy as it looks and it's worse when they have people like you thinking they know way more. They don't have to watch at every single move they make. Get over yourself and stop being such a brat.

You sound like an attention whore who can only get attention from people who are directly involved with something that has to do with you and when they trail of to something else like talking to other people, you through a bitch fit. wahh! no one is paying attention to ME.

29 and 38. I know you would like to think the "customer is always right" and if you ask for something you should get it no matter what because "you're the customer" but thats not the case. Sorry, get over it. No one is required to listen to you even if you demand something THREE times.

Maybe you should let her do her fucking job, slut

#44 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:52am by Triceratops4Lif

... When I straighten my hair, I don't watch my hair the WHOLE time.. Nor when I straighten someone elses hair.
The only attention it REALLY needs is when you clamp the hair between the hot irons and you just slowly pull down..

Wow.. I mean.. Does it take a scientific degree to multi task whilst straightening hair?

YDI, bitch.

#46 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:54am by shani__

i get nervous too when other people want to straighten my hair, but you were just overreacting!

#48 - On 04/08/2009 at 10:16am by warmvanillasugar

Wow, really? My hairdresser is constantly talking to other people while she straightens my hair (and to the people who were wondering, yes, here in America they are called flat irons) and she has never burnt me. Overreaction much?

#54 - On 04/08/2009 at 10:41am by lilymoose

So, You were so annoyed you decided to burn yourself. You didn't want her to do it for you.

#55 - On 04/08/2009 at 10:43am by EffinWhosLife

Two words: Britney Spears. Maybe that's why she grabbed the shearers and said " i can do it myself".... famous last words.

#56 - On 04/08/2009 at 10:59am by saywhut05

#41, are you insane? The customer IS kind of right in this instance. The hairdresser is only human and not infallible, and more to the point, they aren't the one who has to walk around with the results on their head if they mess up. It's the OP's hair, and they have EVERY right to do whatever is necessary to make sure it's done right--she's the one paying for service! A good hairdresser knows this, will listen to what the customer wants and do their best to make it happen, and will pay attention to what they are doing.

Find another salon, seriously.

#57 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:05am by ammali

I've never read a more overwhelming "YDI" FML before. You so very seriously deserved it.

#58 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:07am by msrock

Why are you a bitch? I imagine you to be the type of person that always thinks you're better than everyone else you think everyone knows it when in reality, people just don't like you. You have "best friends" but they are the type of people that will leave you in a second if they hear about anything that will benefit themselves. did you text a friend saying this and get no response? That is because no one cares and they have already given up on you because everyone knows you are going to be all dried up by age 26 and still think that you are worth something.

http://www.fmylife.com/miscellaneous/852008
Look at #28. I wrote that entry and you will realize that you are going to be the girl in that story, you little bitch.

#59 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:09am by Uconnrunner

the girl that does my hair sometimes doenst seem to be paying full attention to me. Shell be talking to her friend or her mom- since she works there too. But i know she isnt going to burn me. She has enough sense for that. YDI. you were a bitch.

#60 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:19am by Treehugger

damn Unconnrunner. Youre harsh. on here and on the other fml.
though, i think there is some truch to wut you say in both fmls....

#61 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:22am by Treehugger

#57... wtf? She has to walk around with the results on her hair of... what? Bad straightening? Heaven forbid.

Anyway YDI. Have you even been to a salon before? They're usually very open/talkative places and trust me, the hairdressers know how to multitask. You, apparently, don't.

#62 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:25am by prettyxdemented

#57 yeah because a bad straightening will ruin your life...

all you have to do is tell the stylist what you want. she can take care of it from there. its not rocket science.

#63 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:39am by amykillswitch

there is a reason why you're the customer, no?

#64 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:54am by youbloodyfool

i understand where you're coming from. I was having my hair straightened one day and the hairdresser was yakking away on the phone and I was certain she was gonna burn me but I didn't say anything... And she burned my forehead and my ear >.>

I definitely wouldn't have tried to do it myself. I just would've asked her to stop until she could give her attention to me. Sucks about your ear :(

#65 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:57am by flipflopsssxo

BURNED!! literally.

#66 - On 04/08/2009 at 12:08pm by LoLeech

Oh yeah why would someone who does this stuff for a living be worse at this than you.

#67 - On 04/08/2009 at 12:18pm by arms_akimbo

See, I can understand getting frustrated if a stylist isn't doing your hair the way you asked, or if they're being careless, especially if you've mentioned it several times and they haven't done anything about it. A good stylist will make sure you're comfortable and will work with what you want. But when you GRAB something out of their hand, and make a snooty comment like, "I'll do it myself!", then you definitely deserved to get your ear burned off.

#68 - On 04/08/2009 at 12:34pm by bioclock

I'm more curious how you have more than one layer of skin... I mean, fat folds or something on the ear would be pretty weird... unless you mean you burned through to the dermis :-P

#69 - On 04/08/2009 at 12:41pm by couldbeworse55

I don't see why you were complaining in the first place. She obviously knows what she's doing because she does it for a living. So while you "think" she's not paying attention to you, she probably is. Hairdressers have to multitask. So why would you complain when she never even burned you?

And seriously, people like you make other people's lives a living hell. Stop being a diva and get the hell over yourself.

YDI. Big time.

#70 - On 04/08/2009 at 12:42pm by goodnightgracie

If you have a problem with her buy your own straighter and do it at home! I barely even use a mirror while straightening my hair. I wander around (as far as the cord will allow) and talk to people and I don't think I have ever burned myself.

#71 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:04pm by MissNae

#62 and #63 -- if the hairdresser left the iron on one part of the hair too long and burned it, or did it wrong and made a crease, or did burn her skin somewhere... Then yes, it could.

If expecting the person I'm paying for service to actually pay attention to the job they are doing makes me a bitch, then fine, I'll accept the label. It's my money and my hair.

#72 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:11pm by ammali

Future post by OP: I kept telling my boyfriend to be better in bed and finally I just pulled his dick out of me and masturbated. My nail sliced my clit off. FML

OMG, that must be very painful O_O

#77 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:25pm by Axara

#72. Mmkay. Most people can multitask. I'm not going to bitch at someone for not paying 100% attention to me. Mostly because I trust people and I don't try to pretend I know more. Who knows. Maybe I'm just more relaxed then most uptight people who worry about everything.

P.S. hair does grow back

ahahah #73

#78 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:30pm by amykillswitch

don't EVER grab a stylists tools! that is the most disrespectful thing you can do and i can assure you that your stylist will never want to do your hair again and won't care to do a good job. you probably *think* you know how to properly straighten your hair but i bet you don't- nobody ever does. don't act like a know-it-all. you are going to her for a reason and why would you be a bitch to someone who can completely mess up your hair that you have to wear every single day?!

#79 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:39pm by killrockst4rs

Today, I was straightening the hair of this obnoxious spoiled brat at my work as a hair stylist. Since I've been doing this for years, I was straightening her hair while talking to a co-worker. The girl kept screeching at me to pay attention, and then yanked the straightener from my hands and shrieked "Let me do it, you're going to burn me!" I tried to stop her but she spastically attempted to use the iron and ended up burning off two layers of skin from her ear. I got in trouble with my boss. FML.

#80 - On 04/08/2009 at 1:42pm by JackFrost

YDI. I'm sorry, but if you were that upset you should have handled it differently than throwing a fit and attempting to do it yourself. Yes, the stylist should have been paying more attention to you when you asked, but you still shouldn't have reacted the way you did. And just because you are the customer, does not mean you're right. Maybe she thought she was paying enough attention and that you were overreacting. But there are more adult ways to handle the matter than snatching the tool from her and attempting to do it yourself.

#81 - On 04/08/2009 at 2:00pm by usmingan

#2 Hairdressers do sometimes use flat irons to straighten hair. Maybe yours doesn't, but I've seen a hairdresser using a flat iron before.

#82 - On 04/08/2009 at 2:11pm by checkyesbecca

I totally agree with #68 & 79.

Ohh wtf?! hahaha! Thats what beauticians do. I mean they've been doing it for SOOO long I think they know what their doing. lol! You surely did look like an ass for that one! That's what you get for thinking your EGO was that BIG & knowing wtf you were doing. Smh. Next time you wanna do something yourself, go to beauty school :) mmkay!

#83 - On 04/08/2009 at 2:22pm by RolliePollie

haha wow my sister is a hairdresser and has to pay little attention when she does my hair.

#84 - On 04/08/2009 at 2:25pm by 0_0

You deserved that one for acting like a brat. I understand being concerned if you think your stylist really isn't paying attention - although most of these comments seem to imply that every hairdresser is an expert and infallible, it's completely possible to go to one who sucks and have bad results. So you should speak up. But you should act like an adult about it, not a five year old.

#85 - On 04/08/2009 at 2:27pm by lnm701

thats why they work there, and you don't.
hope your not a bitch like that everywhere you go.

Ummm #2, etc - straightening IRON. Curling IRON. That's what they are called. Sorry.
Also, I can't tell if the people saying it's ironic/irony are purposely punning. If they are, SO GOOD. I love puns.

YDI
I seriously don't feel bad for you one bit.
If you would stop being such a brat maybe that wouldn't have happened.

#95 - On 04/08/2009 at 5:00pm by curry11

What's the point of going to a salon if you're just going to take over the job of the hairdresser?
I can see why you'd be annoyed if she wasn't paying attention, but you really didn't need to be a brat about it.
I'd say you deserved it, but no one deserves to have two layers of skin burned off their ear. :c

#96 - On 04/08/2009 at 5:00pm by michelle4srs

1. You should upgrade salons to a place where you receive your demanding attention.
2. I hope your ear recovers. That is karma for you.

well. . thts wat u get for being a bitch.

#98 - On 04/08/2009 at 5:56pm by moosey1234

Maybe next time you should try NOT being a bitch.

#99 - On 04/08/2009 at 6:13pm by Panicattackx5

As #25 said. Another term for Straightener is Flat Iron. And that's for Americans too. :D

As a Cosmetologist I'd be pretty pissed if a client grabbed one of my tools. Those things can be really expensive, the OP is lucky she didn't drop it. I can understand being concerned if the person working on your hair appears to be less than attentive, but if she hadn't burned you by then, chances are she wasn't going to at all. And if you honestly felt that you HAD to be so freaking anal and do it your way (because you clearly know everything), then you could have politely told her that you changed your mind. That way, you would have been less of a whiny bitch. ...And perhaps you would have been able to keep the skin on your ear as well.

Bottom line, I am in agreement with the general crowd. YDI.

I personally understand your annoyance - sometimes it just gets annoying to hear someone else yapping, looking away, laughing and whatever, while they're holding a flat iron that could potentially burn your skin. Even if they wouldn't, they're not looking out for your anxiety.

Now, grabbing the iron and saying "LEMME DO IT MYSELF" was a bit over the edge, but your ear said enough "YDI", so I'm just going pure "Your life is fucked".

Lmao, they obviously work at a salon cause they know what there doing!
next time take use of your money and let them do it!

#109 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:31pm by Baby_girl04

If you thought you could do it then why did you even go to her in the first place?
You PAY her to do your hair. Don't act like such a bitch and maybe you won't get hurt.

(My sister's a hairdresser, and she comes home agitated all the time because of bratty customers who think they know hair better than people who've gone through years of beauty school. It ticks me off too.)

Let them do their job, and you do yours by just taking it all in. If you were worried about her not even paying attention, why not just talk with her while getting your hair done? Then you'll get all the attention you "need".

#110 - On 04/08/2009 at 9:50pm by Talkative1

Even if a different hairdresser burned you the same way, you had no reason to GRAB the straightener from this one. Damn.

Just let her do her job, and if she burns you, you can be a frigid bitch AFTER.

Preemptive strikes don't work when driven by fear and not thought through well. Haha....

#111 - On 04/08/2009 at 10:15pm by howohsopasse

you, my friend, are an asshole.
i mean i understand when some hairdressers are being stupid, but let them do what they are doing, that is their career. then maybe you can get pissy if she does make a mistake and prevent the embarrassment.

#112 - On 04/08/2009 at 10:41pm by failwhatwhat

you really deserve that one, you were being a bitch.

#113 - On 04/08/2009 at 11:51pm by Smarty19

I chose FYL & YDI.

Part of being a professional is practicing your specialty with responsibility and care. Obviously, she failed to do both. But also, you should not take it upon yourself to do the job, which your not licensed in, in your own hands. Think next time.

#116 - On 04/09/2009 at 3:41am by Xodus_LT

ironyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

. . . YDI

#117 - On 04/09/2009 at 5:16am by justbea777

I can kinda understand getting annoyed cos you thought she wasn't paying attention and had asked her several times to do so. But she probably was actually paying attention. Hairdressers are pretty good at multitasking! And shit, even if she wasn't, you totally deserve it for being sooo rude. Bet she had a massive bitch about you to her colleagues when you left.

#118 - On 04/09/2009 at 6:34am by babydoll86

The person knew what (s)he's doin'. Why'd you have to go and do that anyway?

sorry, but maybe you deserved that one.

#119 - On 04/09/2009 at 7:46am by Effing

I'm agreeing with #119

#120 - On 04/09/2009 at 9:42am by yesbutnotyou

Well maybe next time don't be such a cunt and karma won't come back and bite you in the ass :)

#121 - On 04/09/2009 at 10:35am by ShannonBAMF

I'm a stylist and if my client ripped a tool out of my hands I would be in complete shock. And then I would've laughed at you when you burned yourself.

#122 - On 04/09/2009 at 11:44am by dayslikethis1

SINCE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING NEXT TIME DO IT YOUR SELF AND BURN YOUR DUMB ASS AT HOME

#123 - On 04/09/2009 at 10:59pm by MissAugust

Wow, must've been tough for you not to have all attention focussed on you. Obviously that's what you're used to because you're obviously such a spoiled divabrat. I'm sure the hairdresser can get by without your business in future, seeing as you're obviously such a styling specialist yourself. Hell, you could probably charge your parents to let you do your own hair?

YDI, btw.

#124 - On 04/11/2009 at 11:31am by Aeth

lol you could tell which people would do the same thing just by there comments

#125 - On 04/13/2009 at 12:49am by jaaxx

You definitely deserve it. Those people do that for a living day in and day out and know what they are doing, so why would you even open your mouth unless she actually burned you? You should have kept your mouth shut, that burn you felt was karma giving you a little reality smack.

#126 - On 04/13/2009 at 8:39pm by Z_Bunny

umm youre a bitch.

#127 - On 04/14/2009 at 4:47pm by b_redhot

You never, never, never grab a tool out of anybody's hands, professional or not. Not only is it rude, it is dangerous. You really deserved it.

#128 - On 04/16/2009 at 3:31pm by Mirm83

maybe that's why she's the one with the license and a profession.

#129 - On 04/18/2009 at 3:02am by youareindeepshit

she is the one with the license, and you are not accustomed to the equipment she is using (it could be hotter than the ones your used to using or things such as that).. my hair dresser told me of a woman who picked up a curler, and unbeknown to her it was malfunctioning and its heat setting was extremely high, the woman proceed in burning off her bangs, after which she tried to blame the hair stylist when in fact it was her own fault for not letting the hair stylist do it.. congrats on being a dumb ass!!

OP:.... You know what's coming.

#133 - On 06/05/2009 at 4:50pm by at0micmin3r

YDI for thinking you know better than a professional. Of course she wasn't paying attention, she's not an idiot. Even I can straighten my hair while chatting and watching TV.

#138 - On 01/06/2010 at 10:09pm by HyperExecuter

Thats what people get for thinking they know better than a proffessional...you went to the saloon and paid to get your hair done, then grabbed the iron and started doing it yourself, knowing you suck at it. YDI
