How do you forget about it in that short of time? You take it out of your bag, put it in the little container, walk through the metal detector, get patted down, then get your stuff. Assuming everything goes well its like a 2-3 mins tops process.

I feel your pain. It's always so hectic going through TSA and especially if you're not a frequent flyer. Put your name on the new one and security will usually call you if it's forgotten again. You will most likely never see the old again.
