Today, before I went into surgery, the patient next to me just finished the same procedure I was going to get. As he woke up in the recovery area 10 feet away, I was getting my final prep before the operation. On my way into the operating room I was comforted by his screams of agonizing pain. FML

Thanks for all the positive comments :) to answer som questions: yes I'm recovering well. The surgery was to fix a deviated septum. The patient before me didn't immediately respond to the pain meds that's why he was screaming. And I wrote this fml last night at 2 am after the anesthesia wore off

No not screaming of agonizing pain... Screaming for joy

You will be fine OP, people have different pain tolerance. Maybe the patient was over reacting.

Surgery is daunting enough without having that added stressor. FYL. Hope your recovery goes well.

This isn't a fml story. sorry do better next time

Mods chose it, people clicked the yes button on the moderating page. So yes, it's a FML story. Sorry, do better next time.

Every FML must start with today even if it was a week ago. I'm pretty sure this was not written today.

Everybody's different. Which means your pain receptors are different and you may have different tolerance for pain. What may send into agonized pain may feel insignificant to the other. Just be glad for that fact.

There is science to be done on the people who are still alive.

That hospital must have terrible nursing staff, or just terrible PACU nurses, if pain control is that bad. I wouldn't have a procedure done there again if I were you, OP.

You're the third person that I've heard that has had surgery for a deviated septum...

Hopefully you will be able to breath out of your nose now and won't get nose bleeds as often :) Get better soon!

I'm glad things worked out okay for you :) Sounds scary as heck, though! I hope the other person was okay too.

I hope you did not get sick from the pain meds and throw up through your nose. That pain would be a whole new beast of pain.

Oh and to answer another question I'm seeing: I'm currently doped up on oxycodon I'm taking about 10 pills a day

If that surgery was in 03, I could have been that other person. they gave me the oral painkiller and took me off the drip too soon. But at least recovery is quick lol
