To each their own emergency

Today, I had to drive my grandmother to the emergency room. I periodically tried to call my parents but neither of them picked up, even when I called the house. We sat there for 6 hours and still no one took her to a room, and no response. Mom finally called back, only to tell me to get her a pack of cigarettes. FML

It is piss poor that OP’s parents never responded to OP’s calls and that grandmother didn’t get prompt medical attention. But there might be reasons - Chances are that OP’s parents were worried about getting stuck with Grandma’s bills for the visit. And Emergency room’s in the USA tend to be over-visited by people with no serious medical emergency. They do a cursory check to see who has a serious medical emergency and those people get in promptly. It’s likely that granny has Medicare or Medicaid so she has some coverage. If it’s not an actual medical emergency, a visit to an urgent care facility is much, much quicker and the copayments are less… OP, you are a loving grandchild and you did what you thought was required and you deserve credit for that… In the case of a serious life threatening medical emergency call 911 and an ambulance will come. And that will get the person in to see a doctor with no delay at the emergency room. If the medical situation is not that serious go to the nearest urgent care facility. They will require proof of insurance or payment - They are not charities and unlike a hospital they do not have to take everyone regardless of ability to pay. The emergency room should only be used for true medical emergencies but not requiring an ambulance run.
