Today, it will be the third time since moving to this area that I will have to call out of work because of gunshots heard nearby, police looking for someone and advising us to stay indoors. FML

As someone who lives about 2 miles from an area like that. How did you not know what you were moving into? Like it's time to move out of there to a better area, or just go to work anyway. Pretty sure your job isn't going to keep letting you call out over this

I’m surprised your employer accepts that as an excuse. I’d figure most would just guess you were lying and give you the boot.

Assuming you have a car, there isn't really a reason why you can't go to work. Invest in tinted windows if you're worried. If you're relying on walking + public transportation, that does suck. I get to the bus by walking past the row of shops that has been shot up numerous times over the years I've lived here. After a while you won't bat an eye.
