Today, my in-laws invited themselves to stay at my house for a few days. They live out of state and have been self-quarantining for months. The reason for visiting? So they can throw a party for extended family at our house. Guess who'll end up doing all the work and clean up? FML

Today, I thought I had the house all to myself for the weekend, but my annoying in-laws showed up unannounced and ruined my sleep-all-day plans by asking me to help clean out their RV. FML

Today, some of my relatives are staying over. My husband was late from work, so I rang him. Apparently, he remembers the family drama and the screaming matches from last time, so he’s checked himself into a hotel until my circus of an extended family are gone. FML

Today, my husband has been out partying all night. While my in-laws didn't ask him a single question, earlier I received more than six calls from them about when I'll be home to cook and clean. Where was I? In the office for the first time after working from home for past 3 years. FML

Today, I hired a cleaner to clean my apartment so when my in-laws visited tonight, they wouldn't think I was lazy. I got home from work, the cleaner hadn't shown at all, and my in-laws had arrived early. My mother-in-law is now mopping the floors. FML

Today, my parents left on a trip. I wanted to invite my girlfriend over for a few days so we could spend them together. Then my grandparents turn up, "just for a few days, until your parents return, so you won't be alone in this big house." FML

Today, I got sick of my in-laws always dropping by when my husband was out. Turns out he asked them to check I didn’t have anyone there. When I confronted him, he created a new “rule”. I can either have my mother-in-law stay full time or I can stay at their house until he gets off work. No, I’ve never cheated. FML

Today, my in-laws decided they were going to stay an extra week during our vacation to Dominican Republic next year. This would be fine, if we weren't travelling for our destination wedding, and the extra week wasn't our honeymoon. They are literally joining us on our honeymoon. FML

Today, I had a bunch of parties while my parents were out of town. I made sure to clean up absolutely everything, I even vacuumed the stairs. As they pulled up, I noticed all of the trash bags filled with beer cans blocking their way into the garage. FML

Tell them to eff-off or pay a rental fee for using your home as a rental entertainment venue. Charge professional prices as well and force em to sign a contract of liability for all things party related. If they refuse, tell them to leave or threaten to call police for trespassing. Your home, your rules.

OP, just say no. No to having your home become a hub for infectious disease spreading. No to the unabashed gall of showing up and deciding to use your home for a party. And if your spouse won’t back you up on this then you have a bigger problem than his stupid parents.

Hire a coordinator to do all the work. Tell them to establish a budget and pay the coordinator before the party.

Only if you are a pushover and do it! It will probably take all your powers of self control but just sit there with a glass of wine and do nothing. Or just leave, go and run some errands and get back about an hour before the guests arrive. If you are worried you will look lazy then a pointed "let me know if there is anything I can do to help you" works wonders.

My guess is: Your in-laws. Your in-laws will do all the work since you will have checked into a hotel far away to avoid the toxic hellstew of Covid and criticism.
