Today, our building owner, who lives just below, had a great idea to make her life easier. When something gets on her nerves, she puts it in the stairwell. Including two dozen shoes, her toddler, her screaming baby, her barking dog and her cat who loves to shit in my flower pots and piss in my basement room, which she is well aware of. FML

Refuse to pay rent, citing slumlord laws for cleanliness, noise pollution, and basic health and safety violations. See how aggravated they get at that.

Isn't your room supposed to have a lockable door? Don't think that it can legally be rented out as living quarters then - at least in the US. (Plus an emergency exit via a window well is required in occupied basements - even if just for an office - too.) Call Child Services per her kids, spray the dog with water and/or let it out the back door, and take her shoes for her own & kids' safety per stumbling. Move all those cat turds to in front of her door then set out a humane trap for said cat. *Don't* inform your landlord that you're "donating" said cat to the Humane Society.

You live in a basement and your landlady lives below? Is she a mole?

Set up an escrow account and refuse rent until she stops.

She's putting a toddler and a baby outside in the stairwell and you're worried about your plants?

Call CPS or the cops next time she puts her children out in the stairs. This is seriously unsafe for them.
