YDI. If you're going to pet-sit, make sure you get full instructions and then follow them. It's just like babysitting-- no "creativity" allowed with the essentials. Although the owner kind of deserves it too, for not finding someone a little more responsible and/or willing to do some research prior to pet-sitting. Poor hammie. :[ This is why I'm glad my vet tech SIL loves to watch my pets, even if she gets a little paranoid about potential "warning signs." It's worth a reassuring trip to the vet afterward if I know my buddies are safe.
