Today, I got a care package for graduation. Among the stuff inside was a toolbox; I never took shop classes or showed any interest in them because of severe disability. I also got a Snickers bar; I hate peanut butter. I even got a bunch of clothes hangers; I had more than enough as it was. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I turned eighteen. Thinking I was going to get a big present from my parents on this special day, I eagerly unwrapped my present. They got me a bag of M and M's. Last year I got flannel bed sheets. FML
Today, I got a birthday package from my parents. It was all the stuff I'd forgotten there when visiting a month ago, along with some other things I'd left behind when I moved out. FML
Today, was my graduation party. My birthday was about a week ago so my parents combined the presents. I thought it would be something big so I hinted for a new TV. I got a snuggie. FML
Today, I received a box in the mail from my mom which I assumed was a care package. It was a scale to encourage me to lose weight. FML
Today, I went to a work party where we had a Secret Santa. I gave a nice set of beer bottles with glasses. When my name was called I naturally picked the biggest gift. I got groceries. I now have dog food and men's body spray. I don't have a boyfriend or a dog. FML
Today, I received my graduation gift, a bath robe, from my parents. My have two older sisters also graduated. The first one got a Tiffany's bracelet, the second one got a plane ticket to Europe. FML
Today, it was my birthday. My parents got me a box of cupcakes. My brother got me a deck of cards. My aunt got me a brochure on how to quit smoking. I have diabetes, I don't play cards, and I don't smoke. FML
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Today, I got a package in the mail from my girlfriend. I was really excited until I realized that it was just a box full things that I gave to her. FML
Today, I received a package. When my mom asked what I had bought, I had told her that I had ordered dumbbells and was going to start lifting. She laughed her way into the kitchen. FML

My Dad spent most of his career as a repairman. My grandfather did carpentry around the home. To me, to own tools is to be able to do things for myself… But seriously, even if you aren’t going to be a handyman or a mechanic or technician or engineer, almost everyone needs a few basic tools in the home. It’s almost part of being an adult… Personally I like Snickers, but even I would be a bit offended if I got one just candy bar for a graduation present. But regardless of taste preferences you can give it to someone else if you don’t like Snickers… Graduation is really about moving on to a new phase in your life - Not really so much about getting presents. Presents are always nice, but they aren’t really the point of graduation. I don’t think I was over-enthused about any of my High School Graduation presents. But I was excited about going to college and what came next.

That you may have difficulty using the tools does not prevent you from making use of them. Keep them where they can be accessible by friends or family who come by to help you out. They may not remember to bring their tools, or know you needed some help with something.

Honestly, even as someone who isn't all that handy, it was good to have tools on-hand. Both for small things I could do myself, and bigger things that I called in help for - Because I had the basic tools covered for whoever was helping me and they wouldn't need to run back home to grab theirs.
