Today, I turned eighteen. Thinking I was going to get a big present from my parents on this special day, I eagerly unwrapped my present. They got me a bag of M and M's. Last year I got flannel bed sheets. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I turned 18. My parents got me a pineapple and a pair of socks. I'm allergic to pineapple, and the socks are too small. FML
Today, I had dinner with my family in celebration of my 19th Birthday. I've been hinting that I need a new laptop for months now and I was sure my family had bought me one. I have got a pair of slipper socks. FML
Friends
Today, it's my 18th birthday. Last month was my best friend's 18th birthday. She spent the night with me, and the next morning, my mom and brother gathered in my room and sang "Happy Birthday" as they handed her pancakes with a candle on top. Today, I was woken up by screams to take the trash out. FML
Happy Birthday
Today, my parents gave me my birthday present. Two weeks ago, I'd ordered an Xbox online. Three days ago, it came to my house, and my parents thought they could save money by putting wrapping paper on it, and giving it to me for my birthday. That's all they got me. FML
Today, for my 18th birthday my mum gave me a black lace thong. I'm a guy. FML
Today, was my graduation party. My birthday was about a week ago so my parents combined the presents. I thought it would be something big so I hinted for a new TV. I got a snuggie. FML
Today, it was my 18th birthday. I got one thing: a fancy electric toothbrush from my little sister. I would say I'm happy to have something rather than nothing, except, for as long as the toothbrush works, there will be a Hannah Montana concert going on in my mouth. FML
Today, I was woken up by my family surrounding me with breakfast in bed and "Sweet 16" balloons. My birthday is in 3 months, and I'll be 17. FML
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Today, I turned 18. My parents remembered that I loved German chocolate cake, so I awoke to a hot, fudge-filled chocolate cake with a slice cut out just for me. I've been lactose-intolerant for 8 years. As I cried, my mom handed me tissues, while eating the "Happy" part of my cake. FML

Okay, come on. I bet some of her friends got cars and computers and iPods for their birthdays. I understand she shouldn't feel 'entitled' to anything, but can no one understand the disappointment? She isn't homeless or living in poverty so her parents can probably afford to spend well.... over three dollars on a gift for her eighteenth birthday. Yeah, it's not the end of the world, but you know what? Half you are posting these messages criticizing the OP from your goddamn iPhones that mommy and daddy bought you. I don't care if you're 'happy getting nothing' (I don't believe it for the majority of you, though) for your birthdays, everyone has a right to be a little irked when zero thought and effort goes into a gift for their coming of age birthday. My family isn't rich but if we're struggling with funds we still put in some effort for gifts. I work a little extra in order to spend some money on gifts for my family, why shouldn't parents do the same for their kids? And don't give me the recession bullshit, because if that had been the issue in the OP's case I'm sure she would have understood or they would have at least explained it to her. No gift would have been better than a thoughtless one. A note saying, 'honey, we're sorry we can't afford much this year, etc etc. ' would have probably changed things in the OP's mind. Stop being hypocrites.

It's all good. I didn't get anything for my 18th birthday =P

YDI for not being understanding that your parents can't afford much this year, not even flannel bed sheets. I understand being self involved at 18, but you need to start learning compassion, too.

OP, just think about how many people in the world don't get any presents on their birthdays. It's very immature to expect things in life.
v1kt4r 13
You sound like a mother of 2 Let the OP gravel abit, she wasnt born in a situation where she cant get prsents, those who dont presents are unlucky but like u already know, the world is an unfair bitch
Sunbolt 0
it would only be bad if it said her sibling got a new Xbox or something
nosyt 0
big deal if he expected presents on his birthday. that doesn't make him selfish

Heck, at this point, I would be happy to just get socks.

#2, that's like saying that a lot of people go hungry every night so it's only fair that everyone should, despite the fact that they don't have to

Well there is a recession on at the moment......maybe they simply can't afford to buy you anything else......They say with presents it is the thought that counts.

18 year olds are adults, technically, and shouldnt just expect shit.

Stop writing essays on this ******* site nobody is going to read it i just read the first and last sentence to see that you are a total douche nozzle
synix 0
Plenty of friends, family members, and partners would have been disappointed had I not gotten them gifts. That's not immature because it's the norm.
null_fml 11
I agree with synix (especially about the hypocrisy), but Flamersplamer expressed it in such a wonderfully concise way. It's not about the money; her parents clearly just don't ******* care.

#57 If you consider that an essay, you're gonna have fun when you start 9th grade
jazzmancarron 11
ok. **** you. bc your a stupid dipshit who for reasons unknown, feels the need to type essays on the internet to make ppl feel bad. again, **** you. now im gonna go back to ******* your mom in the ass.
synix 0
I liked what Flamersplamer said. I don't think her parents necessarily had to spend any money on her, but I don't know, I'm sure anything thoughtful would have been appreciated.

lol? ever heard of an exaggeration? or is that too difficult of a concept for you to grasp. Look at all the other comments they are one or two lines his is 3 paragraphs **** your retarded

#101 - **** her retarded what exactly? On a completely unrelated note, I love irony.
quarty165 0
You know, #101, you really just make yourself sound like an idiot, who curses because he has nothing better to say. OP, I can see why you're disappointed; 18 is a big bday. Still, you definitely sound like you think they owe it to you or something. It could be worse. My mom tried to elope with a child molester on my 18th birthday. Welcome to reality.

thank you. that is so true

actually... if anyone has been taking business classes or any class that involves the stock market, america hasn't been in a recession in years

Don't be an ungrateful bitch. If they can't afford more, they can't afford more. At least you got something.

IA. I'm 20 and in college now I never get much if anything from my parents and I feel terrible asking my grandparents (who have a bit more money, but not much) for things like iPods and more expensive gifts. Maybe you should just be grateful for the fact that you have two parents who probably love you very much and don't need to show that through the types of gifts they buy you.
synix 0
Who says she isn't grateful to have parents? She was just disappointed by their thoughtlessness.
TheTruth1428 0
Her post says she wasn't grateful. She said she was expecting something big. She didn't get that something big, so she's upset enough to come post saying her life is ****** because she didn't get a big present. Add that in to the fact she lives in California, the land of the spoiled, and you got yourself a self centered, ungrateful person.

Be glad you got something. Expecting material goods at such occasions is very immature.
