Today, while volunteering at a local homeless shelter, I asked the woman next to me how long she'd been homeless. She works there. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I walked home from work when a woman asked me to come inside for a free meal. It was at a homeless shelter. FML
Today, at work, a homeless woman called me trash, threw her coffee at me, and told me to get a job. I do have a job. It's homeless outreach. FML
Today, a woman at the retirement home I work at told me she was new and asked me a few questions. I asked her when she moved in. She was a new coworker, not a new resident. FML
Today, I was doing a study on homeless people and how they manage to stay alive on the streets. Turns out the one I was studying today was given more money than I make in a week. FML
Today, I was waiting inside the shelter at the bus stop when a lady came up to me and asked if I would mind if she peed. FML
Today, a homeless man asked me for some money to eat. He ate the five dollars I gave him. FML
Today, while walking down the street, a homeless man walked up to me. He opened his mouth to say something and I immediately said that I didn't have any spare change because I was late for work. He then said "I was gonna ask you for the time, dickwad". Apparently he wasn't homeless. FML
Today, I was going to volunteer at a soup kitchen. I saw a man working, so I went up to him to ask where I should sign in. Before I even opened my mouth, he told me that they opened at 12 and to come back then for my meal. FML
Today, working in a department store, I spent at least 30 minutes helping a verbally abusive elderly woman in a wheelchair find an appropriate jacket for winter. She finally asked me to retrieve one she wanted in her size. When I returned she was in deep sleep, snoring and all. FML
Today, I met a cute girl. She seemed really sweet and I was heartbroken to find out that she had fallen on hard times and was living in a shelter. I asked her if I could take her out to lunch. She said, "No." I can't even get a date with a homeless girl. FML

It is an easy mistake to make OP, she probably found it funny. Come on, if you are working with the homeless you'll learn to accept A, B and C and won't exactly dress to impress--as you probably do not want to rub their noses in it, long hours and expect the unexpected...

Lol I wouldn't think it would be funny if someone called me homeless. But don't worry OP, she probably is homeless AND works there. Maybe... *sniff sniff

don't you guys hate when people reply to the first comment just so that others can see their comment. God, I can't stand it when people do that
wallandpiece 16
But if they did otherwise, people wouldn't see their comment..
DocBastard 40
Wallandpiece - In my time here I've found that most commenters who are that desperate to have their comments seen don't have much to say worth reading.
Tali147 16
I agree with 30 - I have seen many on here who have left comments in reply to the first comment, who are saying nothing concerning the original comment or any of the replies.

Well replying to a comment should be about the comment or else they'd be thread jacking. And no one likes that :L
zack11742 7
But 45 we must remember that a thread jacker is still better than a jack off

35- i have never seen anything of the sort...never.....

That's funny coming from you 57

Not that big of a deal, just apologize for being an ass for implying she's a bum.
Awahso 25
There is a difference between being homeless and being a bum.

Not in British English, smart one.

59 - I think you mean regular English; seeing as how they are THE English.

Well I guess its better than complaining about your new car to a homeless person, idk
tony1891 22
dont worry dude. I'm sure she thought the same about you.

**** Her Life. I guess homeless shelters don't pay their employees well enough to buy matching clothes, laundry detergent, or soap and shampoo. :(
TheGewt 7
Volunteers don't get paid.
navik23 6
You are an idiot.
gracehi 33
Well that would explain why the lady was so poorly dressed and smelly. :p Seriously though, when OP said she "works" there that emplied to me that she was an employee rather than a volunteer.
immaMonsta 8
#11 I partially agree with you. The FML says that the woman works there, not that she's a volunteer; so to the other two that commented, the lady WOULD be getting paid since she isn't a volunteer. However 11, it doesn't mention that the lady was stinky. I'm just assuming that OP drew that conclusion based on her attire alone.
ohmandapants 17
Just because you're a volunteer, doesn't mean you don't "work". So I don't get this logic. You can "work" somewhere as a volunteer... You guys are seriously just nitpicking at the wording here. I'm pretty sure there are no employees who are paid at a homeless shelter. It's supposed to be non-profit, how are they supposed to pay people? It's all volunteers "working" there.
Senseless_487 29
Wrong, 32. There are both employees and volunteers at a homeless shelter. I lived in one when I was a child, and the lobby is open 24 hours a day, which is manned by employees at night, not volunteers. Both employees and volunteers work at day, an it's just employees at night.
joooeee 3
Yeah because the shelter you worked at is exactly like every other shelter in the world so you must be right
Tali147 16
Not for profit does not mean that there are not paid employees. It just means that the business itself does not make money. It uses all of its resources for the work that it is doing. Which includes paying its employees.
ManInTheMachine 20
36-He didn't work there. He LIVED there, which is completely ifferent. So yes, I'm sure he has an idea of what it is like in that atmosphere. Idiot.
joooeee 3
Good point, my bad, but all I meant by my sarcastic douchey comment was that the people who work for nonprofits can be paid or unpaid. It just depends on the place of employment
gracehi 33
@10 You are an idiot. See? I can anonymously sling insults over the internet too. That must make me as cool a you are.
gracehi 33
My original comment was made in jest. I doubt the woman is incapable of purchasing decent clothes and soap, whether she is a volunteer or an employee. And it has been confirmed that she may indeed get paid, so it wasn't an unreasonable assumption. This is a comedy site anyway. Calm down, folks.
gracehi 33
In any case, **** Her Life for being mistaken for a hobo, whatever the reason.
SetoAyumi 7
Theres nothing much to comment on this fml other then it was a honest mistake.
ManInTheMachine 20
Then just vote FYL instead of wasting comment space.

I also have volunteered to work at a homeless shelter before. I think that the reason that you mistook that lady next to you as being homeless is that she might have been homeless before. When I was working there, I found out that many of the workers had been homeless themselves before starting to work there themselves.
tanay97 8
That's all right mistakes happen. Just apologize and move on.
Senseless_487 29
Kind of a brash assumption to make, don't you think?
RussianFox 13
OP was most likely surrounded by crowds of homeless people so it might've been hard to tell them apart.
