Today, one of the comic companies I submitted to, replied back. They said that the story was boring, and the main character bland, generic, uncultured, had no potential for personal growth, a suburbanite, and an ignorant shut-in. I based the personality of the main character on my own. FML
Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was turned down from my dream job at a graphic design firm. Before the interview, concerned about my hobo style would not impress the company, I shaved, cut my long hair, and even bought a suit. They said I wasn't "free-spirited and creative enough." FML
Rejected and dejected
Today, I received a rejection e-mail from a potential employer I interviewed with. I asked for some feedback and they said I didn't seem interested. I had showed extensive interest, even brought up some of the company's recent events, and literally said, "I'm very interested in this position." FML
Today, my teacher gave me a 0% on my personal narrative in my writing class. His only comment on the whole paper was, "Too long, didn't read." FML
Let down
Today, I asked my friends what they thought was my biggest problem. All of them responded, "You're boring." I don't deny it, and I certainly did ask, but… Ouch. FML
And yet, here you are! Congratulations!
Today, I wrote a submission to FML and I realized that I could be doing so much more with my life than this. I mean really, I have real life stuff to deal with, and I don't have the time to be reading these s*itposts, much less making my own. FML
Today, my boss asked me to read through a document. I gave my feedback, saying it seemed like it had been written by an 8-year-old. Turns out it was in fact written by him. FML
Today, after submitting a 500-word essay to a writing contest, I found out that I lost to someone who wrote 3 sentences. FML
Today, my teacher read my story about a haunted house for a class assignment. She liked it very much and turned it in to the office to be sent into a state writing competition. An hour later, I was called to the office where the guidance counselor called my work "disturbing" and said I "need help". FML
Impressive dating strategy
Today, my date took me to some sort of comic book/computer convention. I think he was trying to impress me with his online reputation, but it didn’t come across as tech suave, it was more nerd pathetic, the kind that makes vaginas go dry faster than a sand enema. I went home alone, bored. FML
Today, I was told that I am an incredibly boring person and that it's no wonder I have no friends. I think they're right; last night I dreamt about a nail file. FML

Self-inserts are never okay.

To be honest, the comic company is probably pretty accurate in its assessment.

Aw, I was gonna say that.

Yeah, careful with self-insert stories. Some people can pull them off and make them enjoyable to read, but the vast majority can't. It's all about how you write it. Most of the time, basing comics off yourself leads straight down the Mary Sue/Gary Stu lane. No matter how exciting the story is, a Mary Sue is boring to read. Period. Characters need to be dynamic. They need to be relatable to the audience in some aspect yet on some sort of level above everyone else. For me, the hardest thing about writing is characterization. It takes loads of practice, experimenting, and someone who'll give you a few pointers and opinions. Like someone said somewhere below, you may have a great personality... just not on paper.

Actually, I typically find characters easy, it's the plot and setting I can't seem to master lol

Not ok unless you're Stephanie Meyer, than you can market a crap book series to unsuspecting teenage girls.

Agreed; Stephanie Myers is the only one who can pull it off, and even that was more marketing than writing. Wait, scratch that, that was all marketing and no writing.

Not necessarily. Dilbert's author Scott Adams got a LOT of rejection, especially related to his poor drawing skills, and Dilbert's huge now. So...

First off, I want to say that if you are writing a comic based on yourself, you have the liberty, nay, obligation to sensationalize your story. YDI for not taking such an opportunity.

Charles Schultz based Charlie Brown on his own youth. Buck up; things will turn around. (:

You're not supposed to base your characters on yourself. You probably didn't portray your character accurately, and so it probably came across as flat and static. Use some creatively and actually make a character next time.

nobody's life is that exciting or creative to make into a comic character, or any fictional character at all. If you want to base a character on yourself make it EXCITING!! Make it like you but maybe be more crazy, or have weird powers, or be a serial killer @ night, police officer during day kinda thing. Okay?? dont be stupid and think you're so great that a company's gonna wanna pay you a shitload of money to make a comic book off of it >_
