Today, my mother and grandmother informed me that my sixteen-year-old dog died. I was standing in Wal-Mart at the time. They then yelled at me because crying in public is "inappropriate." FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste

Today, I found out my boss wrote me up because he heard me crying on the phone, and that it was unprofessional. I was talking to my sister, who was telling that me my father had died. Three weeks ago, he was crying about his dog breaking his leg. FML
Empathy lives
Today, my mom walked in on me crying in my room and yelled at me for being a "weak little crybaby." I’d just found out my best friend died in a car accident. When I told my mom that, she said, "Does it look like I fucking care?" FML
Today, my girlfriend whom I'm crazy about broke up with me out of the blue. After pleading with her unsuccessfully, I called my mom for comfort and advice. She informed me that my dog had died. FML
Today, while I was at work, I was on the verge of tears. My coworker asked what was wrong and I explained that I recently had to put my dog down. He then replied, "Cool story, bro. Tell it again." FML
Priorities
Today, I was at a friend's birthday party when I got a call from my mom telling me to come home because my dog died. When I told my friend that I had to leave because of the loss, she replied with, "Okay, but you brought my gift inside, right?" FML
Today, my 12 year-old dog died. My boyfriend's attempts to comfort me involved him muttering, "At least she knows how to play dead now." FML
Poor old Truffles

Tactful
Today, I had to put my 17 year-old cat down. I cried the whole way up to the vet's office and back. After finally coming to terms with the situation, and trying to forget, my dad's friend walks up to me and says, "So, I heard you killed your cat?" FML
Today, I woke up to a note from my parents saying we needed to talk. Assuming it was about the weed I'd left on my dresser, I quickly confessed. Turns out my dog died. FML

I'm sorry about your dog...crying in public is perfectly alright; there are people who do it on a regular basis, for goodness sake. You just lost one of your best friends, I mean, c'mon. :( That's some insensitive family you have...sorry, OP. Perhaps you could get a puppy to fill the void a bit, after a little while? :D

Am I the only one wondering why they waited until Walmart to tell her?

So that she wouldn't be suspicious when the only thing they bought was a shovel of course.

They probably thought that if they were at walmart that she would hold back her crying until later.

I agree, I recently had to put my 15 year old Shepherd mix to sleep and it was heartbreaking. I had to work the next day (as a grocery store cashier) and every time someone bought dog food it set me off crying again. You just can't help it. And while I agree that there's nothing wrong with crying in public, you shouldn't be put in a situation like that in a public place like Walmart. Nobody wants to hear news of a death while out shopping. They should have told OP in the privacy of home, for her own comfort, not because crying in public is "inappropriate".

That sucks OP, sorry for the loss. As for your mom and grandmom, tell them to shut up, because that was very inconsiderate of them. You can cry wherever you want.

You lost one of your best friends. I would cry too.

Maybe one of their oldest friends too, I have a cat, but I grew up with a dog. My fathers dog really, but he was still almost a pup when I was born. I husky-something cross, one of the biggest, strongest dogs you ever saw, a "Beardog" (

I'm so sorry OP. They are heartless people who don't understand the emotional impact of the human-animal bond.

Aww, sorry your dog died. After having him for 16 years, it is more than understandable you would cry. That sucks that they told you at such a terrible time/ location.

Well, telling your child/grandchild that their dog has died in public is borderline sociopathic. My condolences, OP. Sounds like that dog led a long, full life. Stay strong.

That is such an inappropriate place to give news like that. How were they expecting to react? Sorry for your loss, OP.

And crying in Walmart is not quite the same as crying in public. The things I've seen in that store .... smh
