Empathy lives
Today, my mom walked in on me crying in my room and yelled at me for being a "weak little crybaby." I’d just found out my best friend died in a car accident. When I told my mom that, she said, "Does it look like I fucking care?" FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, my mom disowned me and forced me to move out because I didn’t have a crying heartbroken meltdown at the death of my stepfather. She knows I hated the man's guts since the first time he slapped her, so my not caring about his death shouldn't have surprised her. FML
Today, I was in a car accident. When I came home, I told my mom. She just got angry with me, blamed me for it, and didn't even ask if I was OK. FML
Today, my mom asked me if I was crying because my boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend. That wasn't why I was crying. My mom knows things before I do. FML
Today, I had one of the worst panic attacks in years. I was worried nobody cared about me and that I had completely messed up my life. I was hyperventilating and crying hysterically. My mom walked by my room, looked at me, and said, "If you're going to make those noises, at least shut the door." FML
Today, after losing my father a little over 6 months ago, and finally feeling comfortable talking to my fiancé (who lives with me and my family) about it, my mother forced her way into the room and started yelling at me for crying. Her excuse, "It’s after your bedtime." I’m 20. FML
Today, my mother looked me dead in the face and said, "I have failed as a parent." FML
Today, in front of the entire family, I yelled at my mom and told her she wasn't a good parent. She responded with, "Well, at least I had friends when I was your age." FML
Today, my mom talked me into going to a funeral since my dad wouldn't go. It was for one of her classmates. When it was our time to view the casket, we paused in front of it for a second before my mom leans over to me and says, "What if I told you that was really your dad?" FML
Today, my coworker left a tiny mess in the break room. I cleaned it up and jokingly said, "Your mother isn't here to clean up after you." She started crying. I forgot her mom died last week. FML
Today, my mom tried to give me a pep talk to boost my self confidence. Somehow, it ended up turning into a conversation about how much of a loser I am and how I have no friends. FML

Obviously Mom is a Neanderthal jerk. Unfortunately there is no mental and emotional competence test required to become a parent. And people tend to inherit their values from their own parents and life experiences - And some of those are just plain wrongheaded. Unfortunately a big segment of our society, especially people of a “certain age” think that boys have to be “toughened up” emotionally and physically to survive and compete in this world - Hence Mom’s very unkind words. And once she started down that road she didn’t have the maturity to realize that she might have made a mistake and that her son had a reason for his emotions. I am very sorry for your loss - The loss of someone close to you can be upsetting and disorienting. I am even more sorry that your Mom so completely failed the test as a parent when she found you overcome with emotion. There is nothing that you or I can do to make you mom into a different person. And for now you are stuck with the Mom you have, not the one you need. I can suggest that had you started out before you were crying telling Mom that your friend had died then she might have been more in tune with the situation and not reacted so badly when you showed emotion. I know - You really shouldn’t have to manage your parents like that during your own emotional crisis. But it’s about the only approach open to you at this point in your life that might help.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I would have killed her right then and there.

Substituting one kind of stupidity for another does not work. Violence is never the answer unless you are reacting in an emergency to physical violence. Seriously, you think OP’s mom deserves being killed for her stupid and heartless words? If someone actually did that, chances are they would wind up in prison for most of the rest of their life and how would that help?

See, and this is why violence is sometimes the answer. 😒

My condolences, OP! And that's one heartless bitch.

When he did tell her that his friend had died, she literally said she didn't care.

"No, but I KNOW you're a replicant ANYWAY, so it's not like I have any unreasonable expectations!"

I'm sure she'll come to her senses and regret that later

Plot twist her best friend was a goldfish or some other short lifespan pet. Otherwise it's really hard to imagine someone being so aggressively callus.

I'm sorry for your loss. Your mom has bought into some serious toxic masculinity. If there is any time it's right for a boy to cry, losing a dear friend would be one of them. Your mom's shitty behavior is why some people go NC with their parents as adults.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend. Sorry about your mom. Sounds like she is hurting and doesn't know how to share that. That's not your job to figure that out. Hug for you friend
