Today, my lazy bastard of a co-worker punched me straight in the jaw because he didn't get the promotion I did. Being his new manager, I fired him. A few hours later, I was fired for "abusing" my power. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.

HOW CAN SHE SLAP?
Today, my boss fired me. I still can't really explain where the slap I gave him for it came from, though. FML
Work sux
Today, my extremely lazy colleague received a promotion with benefits, while I was fired for "not being a team-player". I had stayed quiet about her constant negative behaviour because my supervisor had said we needed to "have each other's backs". While I was protecting hers, she put a knife in mine. FML
Today, my boss was fired by the board. A few days ago, he dropped several strong hints that he was going to promote me soon. FML
Today, my boss fired me because I corrected him after he misspoke during a meeting. FML
Today, my boss found out I had applied for a much better paying job. He told me I'd do a better job and make more money there. Then he fired me. FML
Today, I won employee of the month. I was then fired for being late. FML
Today, my boss called me into her office to tell me I needed to mind my own business and not question everything my newest co-worker does. Yesterday, I stopped the new girl from giving $6,000 to the wrong person. I was fired on the spot. The new girl was promoted into my job. FML
Today, I told my supervisor how awful my coworker was at her job. I then got fired. FML
Today, it was my first day as a promoted manager. I got fired for being late. FML
Public freakout
Today, a customer at work became violent and started hitting me and my coworker. Not wanting him to get the shit beat out of us, I used a move that pinned the guy on the ground. The police came and he was arrested. I was then fired for assaulting a customer. FML

Abusing your power? More like giving him what he deserved. Maybe they promoted you to do their dirty work and hit two birds with one stone while covering their asses.

Usually it's best to file a complaint first so they have proof of you being assaulted, because then you have something to fall back on. But if it were me I'd let someone else do the firing. HR can usually arrange that kind of stuff, although it takes longer.

You spelled "The Police" wrong. OP was assaulted.

I know right? The balls on some people..

Sadly promotions are usually given to the people who aren't as hard working because the people who are hard working aren't easily replaced.

#36 that's true but also the hard workers have more stuff go wrong because they are doing the work abd the lazy ones seem better because they have less problems attached to them

Abusing power? If you got clocked in the jaw, I'd say that's grounds for termination. Time to get on the phone with HR. I think you'll get your job back.

If assault justifies termination good for you, you were in the right. But if you only did it because he punched you and assault does not justify termination, then you were wrong. I'm curious as to what kind of employment it was.

Are you serious? Of course assault is grounds for termination, it's also grounds for him to have the asshole charged with a criminal offense.

Assault always justifies termination. What kind of job do you think hitting people is acceptable? Except boxing :D

If I punched anyone at my job I would be fired. and go to jail.

If the co-worker had a contract for employment that has nothing in it about physical violence being a terminating offense, OP might have gone about firing him in the wrong way. I highly doubt that's the case though. I also don't know how London deals with at will employment.

There doesn't need to be anything in the contract or a written rule to not attack your coworkers/employers/etc!!! That's an unspoken rule in society. Don't physically attack people! Shit there's a lot of things not in my contract / employee handbook that I can get fired for.

It's a basic fundamental at any job that workplace violence isn't tolerated. If you really need a piece of paper to tell you that.., wow.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought assault was threatening to commit an act of violence or excessive force while battery is the actual term for striking someone. I would say you are justified for firing because of battery then...

Seems to me like you did the right thing. He assaulted a coworker. It would've been the same if he had hit someone else, but it just happened that he hit you. Something fishy happened there. That was no reason to fire you.

You get assaulted, you should have reported it to HR and let them deal with it. I guess in a point of view, it was a personal vendetta for you that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your company.

How are people like your coworker hired?! Totally unprofessional and childish.
Geckosrock99 33
You got assaulted. You had every right to fire him. Go directly to HR and you should get your job back. If you do, whoever fired you should be written up for firing you for, what sounds like to me, an unlawful reason.

This is what I find irritating. You go through life, working hard, obeying the law and what do you get? Pow! right in the kisser. You don't retaliate in kind because violence is barbaric and you're civilized. You use your position as boss and terminate the culprit because that's no way to treat a coworker in a place of work and what do you get? Out of job. I know I don't usually like all these sue sue shit but if I had evidence, I'd sue the company and its foundation.
