Today, my boss yelled at me for leaving on time. After months of management hounding us about our overtime, I get in trouble for doing what I was supposed to do. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I got yelled at by my supervisor for getting an hour of overtime yesterday. The reason I had an hour of overtime was because that same supervisor made me stay late. FML
Today, I got in trouble with my boss for doing what she wanted me to do. I guess she didn't think I would do it, so she did it herself. FML
Today, my boss reprimanded me for not finishing my work on time. Yesterday, she cut an hour from my schedule every day until further notice. FML
Today, I arrived at work and was immediately given a disciplinary write-up for being two hours late for my shift. Apparently the manager had changed my schedule that morning and failed to tell me. FML
Today, I got fired for being late. Apparently you're supposed to be on time after your boss specifically tells you that the office will open an hour late. FML
Today, my boss reprimanded me for a huge screw-up that he was responsible for. FML
Today, my boss at my new job yelled at me for being 15 minutes early to work. Last week he yelled at me for being late for my shift when I arrived 5 minutes early. He's considering this my final warning before I'm fired. FML
Not really my problem, but OK
Today, I got yelled at multiple times by my boss because my boyfriend didn't show up to work. FML
Make your mind up
Today, my boss scolded me for being too friendly to our customers and told me to back off and let them do their thing. Less than an hour after doing as he said, he scolded me again, this time for slacking off and not asking them if they needed help finding stuff. There goes my bonus. FML
Can't win
Today, my supervisor told me off for doing something. When I reminded her that she told me to do it, she yelled at me for correcting her. FML

Some people just can't be pleased. Try not to take it personally. Maybe speak with someone above him/her and make sure they know what's going on, in case your boss tries to formally reprimand you.

One thing I've learned in all the years I've been working - when management complains about overtime, what they really mean is that you should still work the extra hours, but not ask for payment for doing so!

this is exactly right. they want employees to work off the clock but don't want to ask because it's illegal to. then when it's convenient for them bust you for breaking policy.

My response would be to stand there looking at them like you're trying to comprehend how a human being could be so stupid before shrugging and walking off.

As long as you are getting yelled at, smile and leave an hour early,

Sounds like your work has some management issues. Wouldn't hurt to use some of your time off (what little they're giving you) to start applying at some other places that're a bit less dysfunctional.

Your main job is to please your boss and not decide how to interpret what upper management wants. If you work overtime because your boss requested it, then your boss will have to deal with the higher-ups.

If it makes you feel better, my company, who pays about 20% under the national average "because they pay OT", forced us to work 4 hours before we get paid OT. And our OT is basically the hourly rate.

If your boss is looking for reasons to yell at you, it's time to start handing out resumes. Start looking now.
