Today, I turned 23. I had asked my mom for some things to decorate my new place. As I opened the box to reveal my gift, a mirror was inside. I liked the mirror. I did not like the note attached that said "Look inside the mirror to see who is now 100% financially responsible for themselves." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Life is a roller coaster
Today, it's my birthday and my mom took me and some friends to an amusement park. Looking for a tampon, I found a phone in my mom's purse that I didn't recognize. Turns out my mom is cheating on my dad. Happy birthday to me, I guess. FML
Today, my mom gave me my Christmas gift. It was a letter containing $200 and a note saying, "Here's the down payment for your apartment, please just move out already." I turned 18 last week. Thanks mom. FML
Today, it's my birthday. After a day out partying, I came home to find all my stuff smashed in the yard, even my 42" plasma TV. After asking my girlfriend what her problem was, she said a "slut" left a message on the machine stating how fun last night was. It turned out to be my mom. FML
Today, it was my mom's birthday. I decided to get her a Willow Tree statue of a woman fairy holding a heart. After dinner, I presented my gift. My mother asked me how much it was. I replied, $30. She threw me a dirty look, shoved the present in my direction, and told me to return it. FML
Today, is my 21st birthday. I get home after my night out and walk into the garage to see a 2002 Red Corvette convertible. I run up to the car thinking its a gift and there's a note: "Dani this is not your birthday present. Quit drooling on my car. -Dad" Thanks Dad. FML
Today, I went to Target. I was on my way to the bathroom when I find a huge mirror. No one was around so I started to see how my butt looked in my jeans, checked up my nose and fixed my bra. An older woman then walks out of a door next to the mirror and explains that it's a two-way mirror. FML
Today, I walk out of my apartment to find that my car is decorated with explicit drawings and "Happy 21st birthday" stuff written all over it. To top it off, my vehicle is completely wrapped in plastic wrap. I'm 22 and my birthday is in December. FML
Priorities
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Losing my mind
Today, my mom and I were talking about a wedding decoration that we are going to use at my wedding. I insisted that I gave the decorations to her and I didn’t bother looking in my house. She came over for the night and cleaned while I was at work. She found the decorations that I'd insisted that I'd given to her. FML

I don't mean to be rude, but if you're 23, you should be financially responsible for yourself. YDI.

Give it back to her when she needs a loan.

WTF at all the people telling the OP to grow up, etc. He didn't ask her to furnish his house, it was his birthday, and he simply told her what he wanted for it. He asked for stuff to decorate his apartment, that could be anything from a five dollar snow globe to a thousand dollar grandfather clock. I know for a fact that everyone here has asked their parents for something specific at least once in their lives, and in many cases, much more expensive items than what the OP asked for. It is NOT rude to drop hints, or even say outright, what you want for your birthday, ESPECIALLY when it's something as broadly defined as "something to decorate my new place" And it was pretty rude of his mother to leave that note, as it implies that the OP is nothing more than a moocher. It also implies that she considered him a burden when he was growing up. It's NOT a nice thing to tell your kid, and I wouldn't condone it except in the case of someone without a job, not going to school, and still living at home. That is obviously not the case here. The OP isn't "whining" that he has to take care of himself now, but is simply hurt that his mother would do something like this.

Most of the people telling the OP to grow up also told the OP that he needs to learn how to take a ******* joke. My god. My mother does shit like that all the time. And I dish it right back. I'm terribly sorry you "don't' condone such behavior" ****.

Why is everyone freaking out? The mother gave OP a nice mirror for his/her new place, implying that OP has moved out and is therefore obviously financially independent. it's called a joke.
