You should pay attention to the rules of your forum. Some will discipline those who ask to be a moderator.

I became a moderator through asking.. Well it was more of an 'application', but you had to be a veteran member of the community, with x amount of posts, and then the admins and other mods would vote to see who was most helpful, mature, etc.
