If you don't know that this is the wrong approach to becoming a moderator you're probably not fit for being one anyway. Generally it's a natural progression

#7 is right... this also works in companies. it's how I got promoted :D act like the power is, if anything, a burden... well early on, then when you're high enough tell them what you want to do and where you want to go.
