Today, I asked my best friend why she didn't ask our other best friend Anna to be a bridesmaid in her wedding. She said, "She's too pretty. I need ugly bridesmaids to make me look better." I am the maid of honor. FML
Today, my best friend told me that I wasn't invited to her wedding, saying that I was too pretty and that I would outshine her at the ceremony. I laughed and said that she was being ridiculous. She eventually confessed the real reason why I wasn't invited: apparently I'm an annoying bitch. FML
Today, my sister told me she didn’t want me in her wedding pictures because I looked fat in my bridesmaid's dress. FML
Today, my best friend announced she was getting married. I've always wanted to be a bridesmaid but she then added, "You can't be in the bridal party because you don't have the same body type as the other bridesmaids. But you can still come to the bachelorette party!" FML

Has anyone thought of the fact while the OP may not be ugly, per se, she might be that one friend that everyone has that is a total frump who doesn't take care of herself, but her friends love her despite that? You know the kind of girl I'm talking about - no makeup, possibly bad skin, frizzy, unstyled hair, and cheap, boring clothes... every day, no matter what the occasion. There is nothing more annoying than a girl who has the potential to look halfway decent, but simply doesn't bother, and therefore looks like shit all the time. Maybe the OP's friends used to try to help her out in the looks/grooming department, but finally gave up. Is it too much to ask for everyone in your wedding party to look their absolute best? I, personally, don't think so. Maybe the bride was sure that even if she made the OP promise to clean up for her wedding day, there would still be a chance that she would show up looking like a frump and ruin all the wedding photos by drawing attention to herself. I think that's a fairly plausible explanation. Call me shallow all you want, but I certainly wouldn't want such a thing to happen to me on my wedding day!

It's possible that she's lying, and she's jealous that you're prettier than her. A lot of girls wouldn't want their bridesmaids to look hotter than them at their weddings. But who's gonna' say "oh, you're too hott and you'll make me look bad." ;)

Maybe some people just don't care that much about such petty things. But if this was the case and she showed up frumpy for the wedding, then I can understand, here.

You think every girl should be so vain to care that much about their appearance all the time? Maybe they'd rather just have people like them for who they are despite how they look. Some people just "aren't that pretty" but if they are your best friend, you shouldn't care how they look.

Okay, my turn: Based on your response, you must think that every girl should be so lazy as to walk around looking like a banshee all the time. Having put that aside, no, I don't think that everyone should be done up all the time, but I do believe in looking reasonably well-groomed when out in public. Not making a reasonable effort to look at least HALFWAY decent in one's day-to-day life is just lazy. Most people, myself included, like to be surrounded by aesthetically pleasing things.

You are shallow. Some people can't afford extra hair products, make up, expensive clothes, and stuff like that. And there are some people who just don't have time for it. You can't afford to sit for an hour in front of a mirror if you, say, have a huge family to take care of. And even if she just doesn't care about her appearance and is lazy, her "friend" could of at least been more tactful. Sorry, but even if it is your wedding day and you want everything to be perfect (and realistically speaking, it usually never turns out that way,) it doesn't give you some God-given right to act like a superficial bitch to your friends and family.

And the way I see it, most NORMAL people would value friends and family over aesthetics. I'm pretty sure the real meaning of a wedding isn't about everything looking immaculate. It's about celebrating your commitment to your SO with people that are close to you.

I didn't say that everyone should spend an hour in front of the mirror. I didn't say that everyone needs to have expensive makeup and hair products. There are hair products that cost from $2-5, and for most people, that works better than nothing. There is also a difference between cheap (ie, cheaply made, low quality) and inexpensive clothes. This has absolutely nothing to do with money, and everything to do with putting a (very very small) effort into how you present yourself to the world. That's like saying that it's okay to be fat because "some people can't afford to eat fruits and vegetables, so they have to eat off McDonald's dollar menu." I agree though, the bride definitely could/should have been more tactful. Even in this case, I don't think it's okay to call your friends ugly. I was just trying to show that in some cases, maybe the bride's actions could be a little justified.
