Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I thought my parents were divorcing over money, but it turns out the real reason is that my dad has been cheating for two years with a 20 year-old girl from his work. He only told my mom two months ago, after he got the girl pregnant. FML
Today, I found out the truth about my parents’ divorce and why our family is so distant. Turns out my dad had an affair with not one, but two of my mom’s sisters. And that my youngest cousin is also my half-sister. FML
Today, I found out my happily married father has been hiring escorts on-line for 3 years. FML
Today, after spending a week defending my marriage to everyone, I found out my husband has an addiction I never knew about. Hookers. FML
Today, I found out that my parents are extremely active swingers by finding their online profile with photos of my mom with a dildo. I guess those out-of-town trips weren't just holidays. FML
Today, I found out my dad has been sending dirty text messages to my mom. Which wouldn't be a problem except they're divorced and my dad is remarried. FML
Today, I found out my mom had been sleeping with most of my ex-boyfriends. When I was told about it the first time, I took it as a joke. Now I know it's true. FML
Today, I found out that my mother cheated on my father. It turns out she had a drunken one night stand with the manager of the restaurant that my parents own, and where I work. The same manager I have been secretly sleeping with for over six months. FML
Today, I’ve had to listen to my parents discovering that they were both cheating on each other. As I left, they were screaming at each other. When I got home, not only had they calmed down, they were openly discussing whether their other partners might be interested in foursomes or swinging. Ew. FML
Today, I decided to not hang in the library after school like I usually do. When I got home, I found my father cheating on my mother with my girlfriend, who said she was gay. FML

And another reality check: Your dad wasn't getting much sleep with the hookers. Maybe the hookers were just a symptom of your parents' growing apart?

In most cases there are difficult and complex reasons that marriages fail. Sometimes we only hear one side or a highly “sanitized” version of the reasons - Usually the person telling you leaves out anything that makes them look bad and dwells on what makes their ex look to be at fault. I have as suspicion that what you related you heard from your mom or from someone who was telling her side of the story. While it’s true that occasionally the fault in a relationship is virtually all on one side that is rarely the whole story. Many times there are several things leading up to whatever was the breaking point and you are not likely to hear about that because that’s a much more complex story with potentially “fault” on both sides. I suggest that it really is not your place to judge or attempt to “fix” your parent’s marriage. Any attempt to insert yourself into your parent’s relationship will likely backfire. Remember, you had two parents before the divorce or separation and you still have two parents. Taking sides in your parent’s relationship will effectively deprive you of a healthy relationship with one of your parents - And you might not have heard the whole story. Listen, observe, don’t be judgmental and you will likely eventually hear an explanation from both sides. My own parents divorced when I was in college. I had to learn to deal with them as the individuals they were and not as husband and wife.

They’ve grown apart because he was seeing a hooker and because he was seeing a hooker they’ve grown apart.
