There is a high probability that she has your replacement already lined up. … It’s wrong and underhanded, but many people hang onto the one who’s there just until they find the one they want. … Under no circumstances let her back into your life if her plans blow up on her. My Mom did that to my Dad and they remarried “for the kids”. A few years later she did the same thing again. That time however Dad knew what was happening and managed to get custody of the children….

Often, a partner feels like they're taken for granted when they're not married, so they manoever until they get married and can have the protection granted to married people who divorce. That would change if common-law unions gave the same benefits as marriages.
