Man or woman?

Today, I was stage managing a school show. Some kids were goofing off backstage, so I yelled at them that they could hurt themselves. While walking back to my chair, I tripped over my own feet and fell 5 feet off the stage. I shattered my cheekbone telling kids they would hurt themselves. FML

stage managing is definitely an easy way to get hurt. it's even worse when you have to keep an eye out for kids too. i once worked an orchestral show and somehow a music stand got caught on the scrim and was hanging above the students for half of the show before anyone saw it. that could've ended so badly

That is just unlucky. It's not like you were goofing off too. You did the right thing because if one of them gets hurt then you will get sued.

Ouch... I can't believe people are complaining about you yelling at the kids. You shattered your cheekbone, that's a definite FYL.

#2: how is the OP not smart.
#4: you have obviously have never been in a production, it is really hard and hectic so you this isn't a YDI.

FML, yeah I can imagine the hurt too. Damnnn.
And one, its not funny to say first. No one cares, besides you are the worst!

@OP. Ouch. You have my sympathy. Stage managing is hard.

I would've said YDI, but I changed it when I read #4's comment.

That's when you yell "SEE? THIS COULD BE YOU GUYS, SO KNOCK IT OFF"

Some of these commenters are acting like they've NEVER in their lives had a klutzy moment where they hurt themselves by accident. *rolleyes*

A broken cheekbone can be incredibly painful. I hope you get well soon!

#36, here it is:

Today, during dress rehearsal before the show, I came in with crutches pretending I broke my leg as a joke. I then threw away the crutches, laughed and then fell down some stairs. I am now in crutches with a broken leg. I was the lead. FML

I didn't say it was the exact same FML, I said it reminded me of one I'd read recently. They really do seem similar to me. I wasn't trying to be funny :(

I've had directors like you before... in fact all throughout high school... and I say that you absolutely deserve it. I have yet to meet anyone in theatre (who is not a performer or a light/sound/crew person) who is not a total and complete tool.

You deserve it. You deserve it. You deserve it.

Since when is trying to get people to avoid hurting themselves classified as being an asshole? WTF is wrong with y'all?

#51 - On 04/16/2009 at 3:46am by imagineyesterday

(0)

ummm youre supposed to catch yourself with your hands, not your face!

but hey you were doing what you were there to do, keep everything in order. which means no one should be goofing around. my sister has been a stage manager for a few shows (she's a theater major) and the best part of the job is yelling at people.

just be a little more careful!

#52 - On 04/16/2009 at 7:01am by skyoolie

(0)

#50: ALL performers are tools. This person was doing their job as a stage manager: to make sure no one gets hurt and to make sure the kids don't f*** stuff up. I can't tell you how many times performers ruin things for the entire play. They break props, scenery, screw up lighting cues (which I then always had to fix). And guess what? If you DON'T yell at people, they won't stop doing it. You were probably the kid who never listened so just shut up.

#54 - On 04/16/2009 at 9:18am by leko336

(0)

#54 Not all performers are tools. It goes both ways, there are performers who are respectful and quiet back stage, and people that need to learn not to mess around. Just as there are crew who are either lazy or too officious when they should do their job. I've been on both sides, professionally and not- either way its not right to tar everyone with the same brush.

Incidently I slipped when running across stage and flew about 5 6 feet into a slide which stopped after a crash into a flat. Thank God it was pantomime!

#55 - On 04/16/2009 at 10:43am by Daveed

(0)

Total FYL. The OP was just doing her job. Note that it was a SCHOOL production, what would have happened if it was the kid who broke their cheekbone? Parents would have sued and she would have lost her job.

I'm in agreement w/ #12. #4 OBVIOUSLY hasnt been involved in a stage production to know how dangerous it can be to fool around back stage.

"Hey! I have an idea! lets all run around and not pay attention where there could be expensive lighting/ sound equipment to break, as well as YOUR OWN props for the show, or heavy things can come flying down from the rafters at any time!" Yeah sounds great.....

And thank you #34 it's appreciated (from someone who did crew for a few years)

Professional stage manager here. I feel your pain. I've done shows on broken bones myself, and I can't stand people who don't do what they're supposed to do--people really do get hurt because people are goofing off, even if the relationship is indirect!
