(0)in retrospect, my previous comment might be funnier if you lived in country where women like that were ever called "women's libbers." my b.
i don't actually know what oman's term is for women who think that women should be treated like people.
#5 - On 08/11/2009 at 2:13pm by ZuRG
(+1)they're called feminists.
(0)yeah, here and now. that doesn't mean it's universal.

(-1)Gee, Leaper, tell me how women's rights detract from the rights of men. Just give me one example of that happening. You obviously know nothing of feminism as a movement and the implication of equality.
Why isn't FMLife adding replies where they were clicked?

If I do then I will give them to you because it looks like yours were ripped off. Have a problem with Arab women, then don't hang around them. But it is people like OP who will make changes with countries where feminists are looked down upon. So don't diss someone you have never met.

ydi for being from a shitty bass-ackwards country where women are so oppressed. morons.
(+1)Er, before you go on a sexist rant, I would suggest you take a look at your basic biology textbook about what a "species" actually is. Then you could actually make an argument that didn't invalidate itself by your ignorance.
Cause there is a room in heaven where you choose how to be suppressed. Did you call ignorance or sexism cause when i went in there both were gone, I figured you got greedy after you received retard.

(0)Tell your mom to shut the fuck up and that this isn't the 1950's.
(+9)Don't stop being "a liberated woman" everyone should use their brains and being willing to speak in a peaceful manor and have discussions on issues. Besides I would rather date a woman that can tell me that I am wrong and then we can discuss why I am wrong and find common ground. Keep it up, your doing the right thing.
#4 - On 08/11/2009 at 2:12pm by drewpy
I agree with you.
@ OP: I think your mom think she's still stuck in the early 20th century. I like women who are liberated, smart, and independent. And keep having your strong opinions and ideals.

(-1)Your mom is an idiot. Tell her to go fuck herself.
(+4)...Wow.
(0)Oh the irony, rofl.
(+1)There are plenty of men out there who appreciate a woman who has her own opinions. Don't let your mom discourage you!

EXACTLY! RUN THE FUCK AWAY FROM OMAN AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND DON'T STOP RUNNING UNTIL YOU REACH THE UK!!!!
Umm #18 and 45, try not to be completely ignorant jackasses, will you?
That might only exist in poor uneducated ares of Muslim countries, but I live in an Arabic Muslim country and every woman is liberated and has the choice to express her thoughts and opinions.
So again: Please don't be such idiots the next time you decide you want to speak.
#53 - On 08/11/2009 at 3:14pm by Random01
(0)dont be such a bitch
(0)random, you're right, women in more urban and modernized areas DO have the freedom and choice to express their thoughts, but when it comes down to marriage, families don't want a daughter-in-law who expresses her ideas and will go against the elders. Forget any muslim countries, i have muslim friends in the US and although their families value education, they don't want their daughters to show their independence and outspoken ideas in front of other families. In the end, it is all about how much education a daughter has and how she will accept whatever decisions her elders and husband's family makes.
They DO have the freedom to express themselves, but it's not how a prospective husband's family wants their daughter in law to be.
(0)A friend of mine graduated with a double first in her degree and was warned of the same thing by her grandmother
(+1)Point out to your mom that it'll only make it harder to find an uneducated, redneck husband, and that's not what you want anyways. Being smart will attract a smart, educated man who's not threatened by a woman who actually has brains. Ask her why she wants you to marry a man who would feel threatened by intelligence. Those are the men who beat their wives, after all.
(+1)So why did she send you to college? MRS degree? Anyway it's only going to be harder to find a jackass for a husband. The cool secure guys are gonna eat you up :]

(+1)I think your comment would hold a lot more weight if you weren't completely and obviously a moron. If you're going to formulate a sexist argument, at least make it a good one.
(+1)#17, actually, neither men nor women have higher IQs on average, but men are more likely to have either a very high or very low IQ than women (higher standard deviation). However, the highest IQ in the world belongs to a woman.
(+2)Actually Sarahbau, while you're right about men having a higher standard deviation, you're incorrect about saying that a woman has the highest IQ. The highest recorded IQ is a Korean man named Kim Ung-yong with an IQ of about 210. The person you're referring to is Marilyn Vos Savant, who's IQ is still a very impressive 186.

(+2)Sir, I'm still trying to figure out what God forsaken back water area you must reside in, because Women's Rights is no joke. Think of all the women in history who have made a difference. Rosa Parks in the Civil Rights Movement, Sandra Day O'Connor in politics, and many, many others. I'm not saying women are superior to men, because my biggest belief is everyone is equal. You have the right to voice your opinion. But the least you could do, especially on a website such as FML where younger adults and adolescents read the stories, is give your views in a better way, and not use such vulgar and impressionable language like "bitches".

(0)lol, thank you
(-1)"You do realize that statistically women have higher IQ's than men?"
this actually isn't true. the mean and median IQs are the same for each gender, but women have a tighter distribution. result: the male IQ normal curve stretches out wider, so there's more men at each extreme. this means that the top men are smarter than the top women (but the dumbest men are also dumber than the dumbest women, if that makes you feel any better).

at any rate, disclaimer: i haven't read anything else on that site and don't agree with any fucked-up shit that may be there
#30 - On 08/11/2009 at 2:36pm by ZuRG
(0)You do realize that's not how you interpret the curve and cannot strictly judge the smart men as being more intelligent than the smart women?
Bottom line, it all comes down to individuals, not an arbitrary binary like gender.
(0)Actually, that's exactly how you interpret the curve. You might mean that it relies on the questionable assumption that intelligence can be quantified, and I'll agree with you on that.
(0)right.
(+1)PS it's probably divided by sex and not gender, but I wouldn't expect some random survey to take that into account.
(+2)Well actually, it is because women couldn't fight. Sure they were allowed into the military by as early as WWII, but were used as nurses or some form of secretaries. They weren't allowed in the front lines with a gun until VERY recently. And it's harder than you think to pretend to be a guy in order to be allowed to fight. For one, they'd quickly figure out the woman during a physical examination by a doctor. So no, we shouldn't bow down to men, since it was them stopping women from fighting and dying for our countries in the first place.
(0)stupid fml...second time it's messed up for me. grrrr.
(0)If you're smart and educated, who cares? You don't *need* a husband like your mom probably did. You can have one but you won't be dependent on him.

(+2)Ah loves yew.
OP, I suggest moving, actually. It sounds harsh, but if you want to be yourself, your culture there is most likely going to hold you back. It's great to be cultural and to be into your heritage, but you can't let it tie you down to a set of ways you don't believe in.
Because of your area, I can understand where your mother is coming from, but she must realize this isn't the olden days. It's still a olden for her to think you need a husband, too; nobody NEEDS to be married. The fact that you even went to college on your own shows how westernized your part of the world is getting, so she needs to wisen up; there WILL be guys who'll totally dig your opinionated being, even over there, and you don't have to get married anyway.
But of course, there will always be those old people who will just complain about how the kids are getting, no matter where you go.

I think that everyone deserves rights not just men but women too, and not just women either. I personally hate feminists. The only type of "woman's rights" I demand is fair treatment. Personally I think many feminists have got it into their heads that they have the right to be treated specially because they are woman. Everyone should have equal rights and be treated equally. Men should be treated no better than women but men's rights should not be taken away because woman feel they should be treated any better than them. I guess this is just an opinion of an anti-feminist woman? :P
(+1)Any woman who wants fair treatment for women but is against feminism doesn't know what feminism is.
Feminism- n. The radical belief that women are people.
Or, if you want a real dictionary definition: "the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes"
Not sure how that goes against what you said you want.
(0)Well I guess you showed me, huh ? What I really meant is that I can't appreciate the type of women who believe in incorporating their menstrual blood into a giant quilt. Believe me that was a feminist project in my city 8-). I guess I can't "appreciate" these stupid attempts at activism.
(0)Ok, I have to agree, that's just gross. It's like how Yoko apparently sent John one of her used tampons as a gift. Unnecessary and a health hazard.
But don't discount the whole movement just because bad art gets made in its name.
(0)Seriously, leaper, you give women a bad name. You can not claim to "hate" anything when you so clearly don't know the first thing about it.
(-4)Too many negative votes, comment buried. Show the comment.
I'm not giving women a bad name. They already had it long before I came along.
you just add to the list. You call yourself anti-feminist, but you have an opinion and you are judging other women on their conduct. If anything you are part of a movement to sent women back into the stone age. Just because you have seen pictures or listened to radicals does not mean you know anything about the movement. The movement began to gain equal rights for women to own property, vote, have a right to keep their children. If you are against feminism then you should have no rights. The right to wear what you like, have a job, protest sexual harassment, wear your hair a certain way, not have to cover your face (if you are part of Western culture). The right to be on this website is a small part of feminism. If you disagree with feminism then go find a man and have him order you around.
Feminism, as stated, is the right to be treated as a person not based on sex. People have worked hard and suffered so you can make negative comments about their hard work and not get your mouth sewn shut. You seem like a female with strong (ignorant) statement, but you know what, who am I to tell you what you can and cannot say. That is also part of the feminist movement, the right to free speech for women.
Thank you and read a fucking text book

(0)Leaper don’t let these feminist brainwash you, there was nothing wrong with what you said @34. Their definition of feminism does not apply to modern day western feminist, which is sad to say is not for the fair treatment and equality of both sexes. Feminism started as a movement to gain equal rights for women such as voting, right to own property, ect. I’m happy to say since the turn of the new century women have achieved most to all of the rights, which they set out to accomplish. Any other reasonable/logical rights that do not seem prevalent have been already established, and will come with due time. (At least within western society) But feminism in today’s society is nothing more than a clever movement towards female superiority, it has longed stopped being a fight towards equality for all. I’ll gladly support any girl like #34, because no real woman fighting for true equality for all, would call herself a feminist. Feminism today is just the opposite extreme to male chauvinism, both are equally arrogant narrow minded stand points.
And I don’t expect you feminist to agree with a word of what I have to say, but the least you can do is not put down/bury my comment, since all I’ve done is stated my opinion... just another right which you have fought so hard to achieve.

OP your mom is right. as intelligent as most women are, men just see them as cooking, cleaning, and vaginas. if you really are a liberated woman, you will turn out gay 99% of the time.
(+1)Okay, I know lots of heterosexual feminists, you just made shit up.
(0)Feminism is about equality; any word for "male feminism" would be redundant, as men can and are feminists. I suggest you go back and study your history. Plenty of women contributed to the war effort, as nurses AND soldiers, even if it meant donning male garb. Sybil Luddington did the same thing as Paul Revere, but twice as far and at 16 years of age. Nevermind that it's extremely myopic to judge a country's sole success on its military. Have you ever read Mercy Otis Warren? She was a lot brighter than Thomas Paine.
(0)I know of miss mercy! she could really rock the mic :]
(0)christ we really need an anti-femenist spray they are like freaking hounds you throw a piece of meat "saying woman are only good for 3 things" to something as minor as a joke. and they fucking attack you christ do you femenists have nothing better to do then typing angry replies to people who "dont believe in your cause" jesus your just as bad as the people that were being sexist
we need a stupid fuck spray is what we need. Sometimes shit isn't funny, if you were being told you were only a breeding machine by your mother, in a nice way (well nicer than auctioning off her womb), or at least that you needed to be married to be worth anything (because oppinionated woman are SO not attractive...wtf? who comes up with these stupid rules about who gets to have a brain and who doesn't?) because her opinions and education were worthless. (0)Oh my god, we have the same mother!
(0)OMG OMG OMG an FML from Oman! This is so exciting. That's where I've grown up too. (And am currently in Oman on summer break.) The past year I've been away at college in the States. I feel like this is the story of my life... except my mom is a little more subtle about giving me the message.
To the OP, I know exactly how you feel. I've been struggling with the same issue myself and I think the best thing to do is pick your battles wisely. It's important to have your own opinions, but there is a time and place for everything. I used to be so vocal about everything; now I've learned how to present my ideas so that my parents won't automatically hate them. And I still have a lot of views I plan on revealing when I'm fully independent (aka financially independent).
To everyone who doesn't understand the culture of Oman and the Middle East... it's very different here. Women are expected to be demure and obedient, and obey their husbands/fathers. Yeah, it's not fair, it's not right, but you can't turn around a culture overnight. The encouraging thing is that Omani women are making strides all the time now, so change will come. Just slowly.
To FML, it's spelled Muscat now, not Masqat.

(0)Everyone posting that her mom is "stuck in the past"... pay attention! Her mom is stuck in OMAN, which is very similar to being stuck in the past. But it's worse. Because it's the present.
The fact is, if the OP wants to be appreciated as a "liberated woman" she needs to get out of the middle east and move to Europe or the US.
But in any case, it still won't make finding a husband any easier.
(0)that's just wrong! has your mother ever heard of women's rights? times have changed. props to you for speaking your mind! :)
(+3) Oh, you people make me laugh. Let's face it: women are, and will always be the same as men. Having a penis doesn't make you smarter, sorry boys...

(-1)Ladies ladies ladies... guys like Styker in post #12 say things like that just to get you fired up and see how twisted your panties will get. It's a guy thing... we're always amused and amazed at how worked up women get over the suggestion that they might be inherently inferior to guys. But to share a little secret: we really don't care. As long as we have beer, sex, food and sleep, we couldn't care less about the whole "our IQ's are bigger than your IQ's" debate.
Thanks for the responses, please keep them going. We're amused.
(+2)Hopefully you're not suggesting that we move back to this construction in the past; absolutely not. In fact, we should be more concerned with creating a society that favors equality rather than placing leadership in either gender.
These appeals to history make me sick.
(0)I laffed.

(0)Listen to your mom, she is right. No one likes a woman that mouths off about neo feminism.
(-1)Okay, just so you know, yes, some aspects of Oman could be more "Westernized". But for the most part, Oman is one of the safest and nicest places to live in. You might want to do a little more research before you start acting like living in Oman is like living a couple centuries ago. It's not. Bear in mind that it's a completely different, culture, religion, and system of government. But Omanis are happy with their lives. They are also some of the most hospitable and friendly people I've ever met. And Oman has only been modernizing since the last 35 years or so, when the current Sultan came into power.
And for those who will now proclaim democracy is the only right way of government, consider this:
I live in a country that is beautiful, clean, and safe, where I have never been discriminated against for any reason, learned to accept different cultures, made friends from all over the world, seen a way of life I never would have otherwise.... I went to an American school here, and pretty much everyone I know loves Oman.
Oh, and did I mention there are no taxes here?

(0)MEOW!
I wasn't saying it was all terribly behind the times. I understand that it's part of the culture. Yes, I'll admit I wasn't completely aware exactly how Oman works, but I wasn't attempting to imply that the west is better either. I was just saying that obviously her mother's way of thinking is becoming the past, and that if it all truly bugged her she COULD move elsewhere. I wasn't trying to tell her to burn the bridges of her homeland and culture.
I would never imply democracy is the "correct" form of government. Different countries need different things.
This next bit is out of curiosity:
If there are no taxes, how does the government pay for things? Or does the government have so few things to pay for that it's not really an issue?
Duuuudeee !
I love you.
#67 - On 08/11/2009 at 3:37pm by Random01
(+1)Okay, no worries then. :) I'm a little defensive -- it's my home.
Oil. I don't know if this is still true (I'm a little outdated with my statistics) but at one point 93% of the government's money came from oil exports. Granted, it doesn't have as much as Saudi or Iran, but it also has under 3 million people in the country (2003 census was 2.3 million, so I don't know what it is now). Except the government finally realized a few years ago that it will run out of oil eventually, so now they're focusing on tourism as a source of revenue. They're doing pretty well.
(+1)Thanks for the info, and yeah, oil can't last forever... there's less used every year, apparently. It's been hitting the bigger countries like Iran and Saudi pretty hard, I hear, even with the tourism outlets. Must be nice being a smaller country.
I can understand being defensive, not only because it's your home, but also because the Middle East is kind of a hot button these days, so I'm sure you hear some stupid stuff all the time.
(0)Wait... there are no taxes there?!
I have a sudden urge to move to Oman. XD
(0)Thank you hir23, for writing that first so that I didn't have to. I've never been to Oman myself, but I am disgusted with the "MIDDLE EAST? CLEARLY THAT MEANS OPPRESSION AND DISCRIMINATION!" theory that seems to run rampant.

(FYL OP)
(+1)LOL.
(+2)yes she probably did vote for McCain...in Oman...where she lives...
(0)Good call. Well, that's religious conservatism for you... I guess it doesn't matter which religion, or which country.
(0)And did you tell her that this isn't 1950?
(0)thats horrible :X
(+6)Coming from someone who was raised in the Middle East too (Bahrain), I'll just say that there IS a much more liberal youth that some of the more archaic parents just can't understand. And if you're as open minded as your mum fears, chances are you'll find a guy who actually loves you, respects you and finds you intelligent rather than marrying you because of perceived religious duties.
(+1)Goodness...
I sort of feel your pain though. Apparently I'm "too opinionated for one so small" =P
I really hope that's not the reason why I'm still single =S

(0)my aunt is a very strongly opinionated woman and she found a fantastic husband and they have kids and are living a great life. your mom is too old-fashioned.

women dont need education..they need mops and brooms...im just saying
(0)Tell your mom you're not Bella Swan. FYL.
(+2)Who the fuck is Bella Swan?
(0)Bella Swan is anti-feminist because she gave up her friends, family, and life for some creepy abusive guy to have a child at 18. There's a difference between feminist self-actualization and clinical co-dependency, you know.
(-3)Too many negative votes, comment buried. Show the comment.
OK, can't believe I am even having this conversation, but Bella Swan IS a feminist for living her life exactly how she chooses without regard for society's expectations of her.
Way to have a one-dimensional definition of feminism, though.
(+2)feminism = choices
(0)Having never read the series, I cannot go into anymore detail than my aforementioned snap judgment. However, your simplistic definition of feminism needs clarification. Free will and feminism are compatible but not mutually exclusive because "choices" amount to anything. If I choose to rob a bank, is that feminism? If I chose to get a degree in physics instead of library studies, is that feminism? From the outside it sounds like that protagonist sacrificed her entire world and personality for a convoluted idea of marriage. (I don't know if she also felt coerced, but maybe.) That might make her an individual but doesn't automatically make her a feminist.
(+2)Why the hell are you people using a poorly-developed character from a shoddily-written grocery store romance novel as your central point for a discussion of feminism? Look up some names like Marilyn Monroe, the White Rose of Stalingrad, Emily Dickens, Amelia Earhart. These were real women that changed the world. Not some trumped up little tart in a make-believe world. (If you must have fictional contemporary examples of feminism, look at Hermione Granger.)
(0)+ ROSALIND FRANKLIN, Marie Curie, SUSAN B. ANTHONY, etc... etc... etc...
(0)GreenAlbatross FTW.
(0)Your mom probably thinks you live some thousand years ago. Enlighten her on the 21st century.

(0)I empathise. I have family members who tell me that I shouldn't get too educated (I'm doing my masters) nor be opinionated lest I cannot find a mate.
(0)haha! your mom is stupid to think that all women want in life is to "catch a man". don't get me wrong, I love my man. but he lives me for being an independant thinker as well as a lifemate.
#85 - On 08/11/2009 at 4:02pm by Qup
(0)If a guy can handle strong ideals then they shouldn't breed... more women need to be stronger with what they believe and should be heard instead of submitting to others. Your mom is trying to prevent progress, which is sad. Tell her that while she's making her husband a sammich, you'll be making something of yourself.
(0)Don't come home too often. Here's a question for your mom - if all you're supposed to do is get married, why even go to college? Is there a degree in husband hunting?
(0)Sadly, it's true.
(0)Tell mom that you and your lover have a drawer full of dicks, so neither of you has any need for a man.
(0)YDI for not killing your mother while still in your crib. Or better yet, as you're coming out of the womb
(0)Please bear with her for the fact that her ideals and rights were suppressed. It just kills her too much to see you have a voice. It's called jealousy. Keep doing what you do because you seem to be a very intelligent woman.
(+3)How can anyone read the comments on this thread and tell me that hate and discrimination against females does not exist?
(0)this kinda made me sad. there's so much sexism in these comments, it's ridiculous. come on people.
(0)want to hear a joke? WOMEN'S RIGHTS!
hahaha jk. I'm a woman myself.
Only weak-minded and insecure men will be intimidated by your liberation, strong opinions, and ideals. You don't want them as husbands anyways. :] A true man is secure in himself and isn't afraid of a woman who knows what she wants and has a lot of knowledge about many different subjects. In fact, a true man LOOKS for a woman like this. Remember that the next time your mother says something like this to you.
However, there is no need to get really mad at your mom / say anything upsetting to her. She can't really help what she said; those are the values that were instilled into her when she was growing up.
(+1)Does that mean that no one should get mad at or say anything to upset racist people, because that's just how they were raised? Absolutely not. These people have access to the outside world. They have every opportunity to correct their ignorance, and they choose not to. They should be held responsible.
(0) DameGreyWolf, the government sometimes doesn't need to tax its citizens because they get enough money from tourism. Eg: Panama, it gets its money from the canal and tourism.

YDI for not knowing your place.
(+1)Having opinions is a wonderful thing! I am a feminist woman currently pursuing my doctorate. I am very opinionated. I also have a fiance. Obviously, it is not impossible to find a husband and be opinionated at the same time. Besides, I would be miserable if I had to be with someone who didn't respect my opinions. And, as others have said, you don't HAVE to have a husband. Only get married if you want to, its really none of your mother's business.
(+1)I so agree with number 108. I am a definite feminist and VERY opinionated, and though I personally wants husband, but that doesn't mean anyone has to have one if they dont want one. It's not a man's world anymore. Women have rights too.
(0)Don't ever stop being a liberated woman. Good for you. You should NEVER have to silence yourself or submit yourself to someone else's ideals to find a partner. It sounds like you have potential to go far in life so don't let any man, or your mother, hold you back.
Wait until someone comes along who appreciates you for your honesty and intelligence, you'll find one eventually! :)
(+2)stryker0530 sounds like a backwoods hillbilly that's married to his sister....
Don't listen to your mom. This isn't the fifties anymore.

(0)GO MOM!!!!! YDI
(0)Tell your mom that your life doesn't revolve around finding a man, and that when and if you do find a husband, you want him to be a true friend and partner to you rather than just someone you cohabit and breed with.
And to the person who said feminism about choice...the problem with that definition is what choice actually means. A woman who grew up being told that women should be submissive, should get married, and should avoid having a career might technically choose a husband and be a housewife. But was that really a choice, or just a reflection of how much our upbringing influences our decisions? I don't have a problem with women being housewives, but I also think that just because someone wasn't actually forced into doing something doesn't necessarily mean they had a choice.
(-1)Your mom is right. Get to it.
(-2)Maybe the OP turned into one of those bitchy, smug, obnoxious feminazis.
(0)That was my first reaction, but the OP is from Oman, where women actually have real problems with sexism.
(0)It sucks that your mom would say something like that. Times are changing and women should not be relegated to the submissive role. They can be no different than men. The only difference is that they're a different biological sex.
(+1)I'm a Muslim and a man. Contrary to all of the Islamophobic comments so far, I don't want my wife to be submissive or have no opinions of her own. Also I'm sure the culture of Oman (although I'm neither Arab nor from Oman) is not against women who have strong opinions. I think a clarification from the OP is in order as to what types of opinions she had that her mother objected to.
(0)It's not Islamophobic. Islam by it's very definition is fundamentally against women's rights. Sharia law discriminates against women and gay people in a way that contravenes all human rights legislation.
OP keep being yourself. It is people like you who will make a difference in the future
(0)A female feminist thats rare.
Your mom if i cant see right is a stupid blond whore who doesnt like to think for herself.
Women are people so they should and are giving theyr own opinion's and ideal's not just sitting listening to men nodding along cause your afraid they wont like you for standing up for your own toughts.
(-1)woot! lets all be femenists and take up half a page showing these "ignorant pigs" that woman CAN waste their time trying to convince people that wont be convinced on a pointless site as this! That will show men that we have an opinion on such a "mature" site as fmylife!
(0)holy fuck are you writing a book here? damn get a fucking website for that shit people on fml dont have the attention span to read a bitching femenist. Heres a tip get that vagina to stop bleeding
(0)I did not read a word of that.
(0)@138
Ya you're probably the biggest idiot on this site. So how about you take your blond little butt and go tan or something and leave comments to people who have intelligent opinions.
(+1)The GOP has a profound tendency to oppose many of the core issues that Feminists fight for. Abortion is the right to choose. Gitmo is a hell hole that should have been shut down about 50 years ago. The "terrorists" we're supporting are wrongly accused people that might just turn into terrorists because of how we've treated them. I don't care if you're a "great boyfriend", you're still a pig (no offense to pigs). Europeans stole most of their inventions (or slightly modified them) from other civilizations. Guns needed Chinese gun powder. Pasta is a deviation of Chinese noodles. Cuisine and Architecture are derived from Southwest Asia and Northern Africa (Middle East and Egypt for the geographically challenged).
Oh, and here's the show stopper you Aryan git: The vast majority of white people and Europeans, or Caucasians to bundle them up, descended from the people of the CAUCUS MOUNTAINS, a Middle Eastern mountain range. So, before you start getting uppity about your European heritage, remember that the Mediterraneans killed off most of the original and EXTREMELY primitive Europeans and that you are a descendant of the same region the OP is from.
Now turn off your computer and stay the hell off this site until you've read a history book or two, you uneducated, self-righteous dipshit.
To everyone else, I apologize for this exceedingly long rant. It won't happen again. I just knew there was no way in hell he would ever figure this out on his own.
PS If you don't like the government or Socialism (police, fire, medicine, education, etc.), you're welcome to piss off and live in a Communist nation like North Korea or set up your own "perfect society" on a .5 sq/mi Polynesian island.
ok, I'm done now. Really. (Sorry!)

(0)One last thing, whites are the minority of the world. About a fifth of the world is Chinese. Another good chunk is African or Indian. Also, the three biggest religions in the World are Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Christianity is lurking somewhere around number 4 or 5. So yes, the chances are that you are a minority in several respects. Oh by the way, the last gender ratio estimate was about 51.035% female to 48.952% male. (the discrepancy is due to unidentified hermaphrodites or non-genders)
(0)don't be sorry, you're completely right!
(0)You are taking everything way too literally. While whites are technically a minority throughout the world, in pretty much every 1st world nation they make up a good percentage of the population. Maybe whites didn't invent everything they have been given credit for, but the truth is they have been largely dominant throughout history, and that is why they are able to steal other cultures ideas and inventions. But to just list a few things that are commonly thought to be invented by Europeans and say they were actually invented by Eastern countries is misleading. There are many things that Europeans invented or improved on, but based on the fact you are a so-called history buff I think you know what I am talking about.
(0)# 138, can you please back up your info with some links or something? because try as i might, i cannot find those quotes on Canada's health care.
Please, if you're going to bring politics into FML, at least back your statements up with some real facts.
oh, and it seems to me you're saying that it's okay for woment o have opinions as long as they are the same as yours...
(0)I am speechless. You are an imbecile. How do you know universal healthcare doesn't make people happy if you live in the US?
I AM British and although our NHS is nowhere near perfect I am pretty damn happy that I am entitled to free healthcare. If I don't like it, I can go private! However, you seem to suggest that the rich can still buy the treatment they need ahead of others, and yes, they can through the private sector. However, if you are seriously ill and taken to the emergency room or in an ambulance, you can't go private. Until your situation is no longer critical you won't be transferred.
And you're using statistics badly, it IS true that there are thousands of people on waiting lists but its not like those are all for life-threatening conditions. People who need ingrowing toenails sorted are on those lists until they are treated. The NHS was founded on the idea that medical treament be based on clinical need, not ability to pay.
The problem with the National Health Service is not that it is underfunded, it's that it is inefficient and badly managed. Gordon Brown, while he was Blair's Chancellor, effectively doubled NHS spending, while productivity is down 4%. The problem is Gordon Brown's solution to everything, which is throwing money at the problem and not expecting improved results.
The best thing about having government-managed healthcare? We can vote out people who are managing it badly! Gordon Brown's incompetence will soon be gone. If Labour gets voted in again at the next general election, I will eat an X-ray machine.
Anyone who attempted to make the NHS funded by the British public in any way other than the tax we already pay would be committing political suicide. The idea of paying for health insurance is alien to most British people. We complain about it, and it really needs some fixing, but the British are very proud of their NHS.

(0)i like the crusts cut off please.
(0)Oh, to be a woman in the Middle East. You have my sympathy.
(0)You all suck, why would women need rights, they didnt before and everyone was happy and look at this, now they try to claim rights to shit and it all just fails.
(0)I would like to point out that there is a limit to being a "liberated woman". If i had to guess I would say like 80% of men will eventually get pissed off at a wife that refuses to cook/clean at all. There's nothing wrong with an EDUCATED woman, but they should still cook/clean every once in awhile. I'm not saying only women should work the house, men can too. The thing is nowadays a lot of women won't cook or clean or just plain suck at it. Maybe the mother had just cause; the girl may have been acting stuck up. Maybe she is acting like she is above cleaning. Then the mother would have just cause.
Oh, and sorry about grammer and spelling; I typed this on my phone!
(0)Bet that took forever, typing all that on your phone, and doing it moderately well.
I think the spouses should take turns doing household chores, along with the children if they have any. My father is the type to just sit on his ass and do nothing and expect the rest of us to do everything. If he DOES do something, he usually ends up breaking something (on purpose, mind).
Personally, if I got married, I obviously wouldn't mind doing some chores... just as long as it wasn't the dishes. Oh god do I hate handwashing dishes, and I think I forever will. Laundry, dusting, organizing, that's all fine to me, in fact I actually love organizing and putting things away.... but at the same time I also love not doing anything at all to them [thinks about her multiple piles of clothes EVERYWHERE in her room... lol]. Ahurr... well, whatever.
But yes, a total bitch who does NOTHING EVER... is a total bitch.
I agree. There is a difference between dedicating your life to raising children or choosing to stay at home and take care of the house, cooking and other background chores. Housewives do great things, children do better with a mother/father at home with them. Women who wish to live their lives like that are working just the same as other women, child care, housecleaning, and whatever else they choose to do can be just as difficult as other work. But women who choose to not have children, who wish to continue education (i am not saying housewives are not educated) or work in the "business world" are often judge harshly for this. OP's mother obviously comes from different beliefs and cannot be blamed per say for being worried about her daughter. Most people are coming from western cultures where women have the opportunity to choose not to marry. Perhaps OP is part of a culture where marriage is important. Wouldn't you give your child crap about not going to college or (if you are religious) not going to church. Her mother just wants the best for her, but is coming from the past not the future.
OP, your mother was rude to say what she did and I would be pissed as well. But stay strong in your ideals, it is your life. You can always move to another country where you can live how you want. Or you can be a strong woman and work for feminism (equal rights for all sexes) in your own way. I think being an enlightened, educated woman is a great thing. But if we argue the right to be a feminist then we have to argue the right for all people to have the right to believe in what they will. You should maybe not be so aggressive and slowly work on your mother. Ask her about her own past dealings with "liberated woman" and perhaps you can show her a smart woman is a great wife for a smart man.

I'm sorry about your mom, OP. ALWAYS be strong and independent. Don't be oppressed or feel you have to be inferior to men in any way.
I agree. But if she doesn't like it then she can leave her culture. She needs to decide what she wants out of life, being babied and treated like a doll with breeding capabilities (new BARBIE WITH BABY MAKER--make all you friends green with envy as Barbie pops out fifteen children. LOL sorry.) or she can leave to another country. She makes her choices. She is a liberated woman? well go liberate yourself.

(0)So you're saying that women should have to throw away their lives for a blob of cells that does not yet have an identity and the atrocities American soldiers commit are okay because they're American. Our soldiers are assassinating, executing and murdering people around the world because they didn't obey our laws and they weren't born in our country. The terrorists are doing exactly what we are doing. They are killing people from another country because a few people in the victim's country did something "wrong". They killed a soldier. That soldier probably killed an innocent civilian. And whether or not it was an accident, that soldier is part of an invading force. The terrorists care about their rights as humans as we do our own.
By the way, we're going after the wrong terrorists. Yes they were part of Al Qaeda, but the ones behind 9/11 were Iranian. Not from Iraq or Afghanistan. And America was the one who gave the terrorists their weapons back in the 80's. Stop watching Fox news you dolt.

(0)You just completely made that up. Al-queda was responsible for 9/11. And as for the OP, nobody likes a bitchy feminazi, hate to break the truth to you. You can be strong minded without seeming like a person that feels entitled. Men are stronger than women. Get over it. Pretty much on every other level men and women are equal, maybe women a little smarter. There are differences and to say that women are equal to men in every way is so false.
@184: was that to me? I wasn't saying that we allow people to be raped or to throw their lives away for a child. If she doesn't want kids or marriage then she has a right. Nor do I support the assassination of innocent people. I DID say, or meant to say, that she either chooses to stay in the country when she feels she is being mistreated/undervalued, and leaves, or she tries and is either trapped by her culture and held prisoner or gives up. The choice is hers. Since she is/went to college that means she was able to leave her home to attend. As we have seen with Iran, you cannot force people to be liberated, you can merely give them the tools and the message and let them build their own view. I have no idea what you are going on about? It is terrible but stop being ignorant. I don't see reliable fact sheets, I don't see evidence.
#202 - On 08/11/2009 at 10:29pm by LaceyPatrickson
(0)For clarification, the comment was directed at 171. Al Qaeda was responsible, but the individuals who carried out the act were exiled Iranians that had received their training in Iran. Not Afghanistan or Iraq. Lacey, I agree with your sentiments completely. The nesting system for comments on this site is abysmal.
Gotcha, I suppose you just needed to clarify that. Perhaps you have a website with more information specifically relating to your argument.
But yes, the nesting system sucks almost as much as being undervalued for your mind. LOL

(0)WTF, you didn't even get what I was saying. I am very much pro-choice and am GLAD we have abortion, not that that has anything to do with my comment. It seems like you just wanted to bring up abortion to instigate more debate here. Regardless, did my comment go totally over your head, or just partially? From the looks of your response, I'm guessing totally. "Sweety." ;D
You need to find someone who will love ALL of you. Marriage is a partnership, not ownership

(0)The Arabian Penninsula is a nice place. Leave the OP alone!
(0)Hey dumbass (#138), Oman (Muscat) is like saying America (New York). Oman is not in Europe, Latin America, or Africa. It's in Asia. No, not like China and Japan, the rest of Asia.
Sadly, I bothered reading the rest of your post - based on your initial stupidity, I was pleased to find that you remained within the same vein of ignorance. What the hell does universal health care, Guantanamo, the war in Iraq and Bush have to do with this FML? Were the 'shrooms at least good?
People, please stop assuming that this mind-set is exclusively Middle Eastern or Muslim. There are plenty of girls right here in the West who act like bimbos on purpose so as not to intimidate men. This idea of women not being too opinionated or strong-willed in order to "land a man" is universal.
You make a brilliant point. I think the Trolls are strolling tonight. I think the comments about Bush and the Iraqi war have something to do with people thinking that the OP, who is educated, somehow inadvertantly started the Iraqi war or some shit like that. Or that her having a mother who believes one thing makes all women in that area ignorant. Just because a culture forces someone to do something does not mean they believe it.
AND THANK GOD, you bring up a brilliant point. Perhaps woman are also partially responsible for this idea that women are stupid and need men to think for them. Some women are, just like some men are. I wish more people were like the OP and acted like Liberated Women.

(+1)Nothing's more sexy than a woman that can speak her own mind.
(0)having strong opinions is great, but being over-feminist is stupid. equality between sexes isn't about having the *same* rights, it's about giving the fair rights to both sexes. if you have a bra and a jockstrap, you give the bra to the lady, and the jockstrap to the guy, you don't have to give the same thing to both sexes just to be *equal*. feminism is overrated. (i am a female.)
(0)I think you're confused about what rights we're talking about.
when there's discrimination towards women, it means women might not be allowed to:
1. be a witness in court.
2. own property.
3. have a job.
4. receive education, or are told that women (not the particular woman) are too stupid to study it.
5. vote.
they're basic things.
we're not talking about women shouting because the percentage of females studying in a certain place is only 35%, and not 50%.
treating both equally in every single thing is indeed nonsense.
as for the OP - there are definitely people who prefer women like you. don't worry.
(0)#226 please clarify who meant by "we're", because there's feminist out there shouting for that very reason. Feminist have fought for the right to go topless in public, ...why? because men have that right and of course since men have that right and women don't it is seen as unfair.
its ridiculous #223 is right
(0)I'm a 18 year old Arabic girl living in the us. I was born and raised in Palestine, I find the OP situation kind of weird because Arabic parents usually likes their kids especially their daughters to be educated. My mom always tell me that my only weapon is my education, she always tell me not to think of marriage until I'm done with college and to be independent before i do so and to make sure hes the right one. For those who are being racist to Arabic people, your thought of us aren't true, I think Arabic people treat their wives, mother and sisters like princesses. They treat them better then boys, because they send Arabic girls to college and let the boys work in gas stations etc.... for example: My sister is a doctor and my brother owns a gas station, and all the Arabic girls I know are very educated and independent, so plz don't judge us without really knowing us!!
(0)One more thing in my religion which is (Islam) The first thing god told us to do is to read meaning to get educated, and to prove it here is surah its called iqraa from the qoraan (Islamic holy book) translated into english, (Recite in the name of your Lord who created.
Created man from a clinging substance.
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous.
Who taught by the pen.
Taught human that which they knew not. [Surah Iqraa, verses)
(0)Don't think of me as religious because I'm not near religious, I don't even pray but I surly hate people offending my race and religion, but I sure know my religion and it only thought me to love and respect! Nothing that you hear on the media is true, you need to be open-minded, and if you think of us as terrorist then how come we don't think of you as terrorist when we hear all kinds of stories everyday about people killing each other and murder each other because its not about religion or race! In Islam if you kill someone you'll go straight to hell, religion should be judged based on people.
(0)should not be**
(0)hell that sounds fine to me. I am tired of getting smacked around from my "liberated" woman.
(0)Tell your mom that because of Lincoln she has to clean my house.....
(+2)Dear commenters,
Finally, the OP is here to speak up. I would like to clarify a few things about my post.
First, I'm really sorry that this has been misinterpreted as a commentary on the state of affairs in Oman. It is not. Oman is a wonderful country that is consistent with "hir23"'s claims. NEITHER IS MY FAMILY MUSLIM. I thus do not feel like it is my place to comment on the state of muslim women in Oman, but from what I can tell, they seem happy and free. So to reiterate: Not Muslim, Not Omani. I just happen to live there.
Yet, my culture is pretty archaic and places undue value on conformity.
(0)WTF is a liberated women doing on fml?
(+1)Also, as the OP I would like to apologize to the muslim/arab community on behalf of people who clearly don't know what they're talking about. I have lived in an arab country for years and have deep respect for your people.
(0)@#134 and others,
However, the types of opinions and ideals I talked to my mother about had to do with freedom to choose your own way of life. One that might be contrary to the cultural norm of getting married young and having children.
(0)Gah. I'm a Vietnamese woman going to college in the US, and these days when I'm home in Vietnam, EVERYONE tells me not to get a Ph.D. because it'll make it hard for me to get a husband. I have so many sardonic responses to that, I don't even know which one to start with.
(0)I was pointing out your double standard in holding us soldiers to account but not terrorists. Also, if u don want to get pregnant use contraception.

(0)@at stryker... Who actually gives a crap, what is wrong with you!? " women are only good for cooking, cleaning and sex?!" that is sick!" women Rights is a joke!?" do you know how offensive that is to women? Go die!
(0)Don't worry about your mom, mine said the same thing. I found an cute and educated man who wants me to to be an activist for what I believe. I married him in April. You'll find a great guy, too. Your mom will see, or she won't, but don't let family pressure change your mind or heart about what you want to do!

(0)Are you Desi???
(0)yep. I'm desi.
(0)If what your mom said was true, there wouldn't be anyone worth marrying anyway. I wouldn't worry. Yeesh, is she like, the Mrs. Bennett of the 21st century? Ignore her, even if she is your mom, some people aren't worth the attention they get for being imbeciles.
(0)It sounds like she meant stuck up. So I say YDI
(0)you belong in the kitchen, bare foot and pregnant. ydi for not listening to your mom
YDI for living in Oman. Go blow yourself up you suicide bomber.

(0)fuck that. don't listen to your mom. its 2009 for god sake, take advantage of the fact that times have changed and don't be afraid to have strong opinions and ideals! i thought men were supposed to be so strong and tough? but they cant even handle a strong women who thinks for herself? fuck that there are plently of people, men too, that find strong women beautiful. don't ever give in.
(0) I feel bad for your mom. she's spent her life pleasing others to be attractive. men in our generation are attracted to human girls, not stepford robots. don't live your life for others, it's one thing to want to do things for someone, it's another to play a character thar isn't you.
(0)your mother sucks no offense ,she sounds really old fashioned.take my advice and dont fucking listen to her people who live by those ideals arent actually happy and usually are not treated nearly as good as they could be because of thoughts like that.

(0)All white people are fat, fuck their sisters, have missing teeth and talk like idiots. All blacks are uneducated and criminals. All Hispanic people are illegals and can't talk English. Sound ignorant? Well that's exactly how you morons morons sound when you say Muslims degrade women and what knot. Maybe if you actually picked up a book every once in a while you'd realize all that shit is media bullshit. I am a Muslim and I have more respect for women then most people i know. Jews and and Muslims have a sense of respect for women that is unmatched. But than again how would any of you racists know that because you are too busy being programed by the likes of these terrible excuses for media organizations.
you have just proven you cannot spell.

Cause nothing says love like a Burka, lack of education, and being defended by a man who does not know how to spell.
HADITH Sunan Abu Dawud [14:2526] Narrated Anas ibn Malik:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, "There is no god but Allah" and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). The tyranny of any tyrant and the justice of any just (ruler) will not invalidate it. One must have faith in Divine decree.
KORAN [4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.
HADITH Sahih Bukhari [5:58:234] Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.
HADITH Sahih Bukhari [7:62:64] Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

(-2)bongoverthedrink - Muslims would be better if they took showers. The only thing they do for me is stink up my air
harsh.
#270 - On 08/13/2009 at 6:03pm by LaceyPatrickson
(0)lmao coming from a hick that doesn't really offend me.
(0)Dumbass, the Prophet married Aisha when she was in her twenties.
Where is YOUR textual evidence?
#278 - On 08/14/2009 at 3:08am by LaceyPatrickson
(0)you're saying that muslims are dirty but actually europe learned to take a shower too late (later than eastern countries) . in 15th century people only took a shower once a year in england. henry the eighth only had two showers in all of his life.
i live in a muslim country and whenever i go to a country in europe, i find it too difficult in toilets. because in muslim countries, we do in fact wash our asses with water coming from the tap in the closet. but you guys dont. i live in a muslim country (turkey) and i think i am much cleaner than you are
(0)using as evidence my own life.. i can safely say that that's NOT true.
#262 - On 08/13/2009 at 1:08am by laleona
(-2)Mommy knows best, now quit whining and get back in the kitchen.
(0)Baha. I understand where the mother is coming from, but she's got it all wrong. I have strong opinions and I was married by 21 :P
(0)If you are indeed "liberated", than you know you shouldn't give up who you are no matter who says what. Trust your judgment. The kind of husband that your mom is talking about is not the man who would make you happy anyway...
(+1)What did I misspell? you imply that I spelled something wrong but don't actually point anything out. Where did you get those passages? I bet it was some website that isn't even run by a Muslim. There are a bunch of websites that falsely translate the Koran, again try picking up a book.
(-2)when i have children i sincerely hope my daughters do not evolve into "liberated" women. i can't stand them. and i agree it will make it more difficult to find a husband that isn't a pussy whipped individual.
(no sarcasm at all)
(0)People like you should be sterilized.
(0)your mom is a stupid git. its good that you have education.
anyway wat decent husband wud want a ditzy wife?
(0)Welcome to the Gulf, but you already knew that. I suggest you "liberate" yourself to another country with your fresh degree, where your mom can be disappointed with your man who accepts your opinions instead of squashes them.
(0)And you listened? I love my mother to death, but if she said something like that to me, I would hit her.
(0)tard
(0)Your mom is a whore and needs to get ram rodded by the whole village
(0)Your mom sounds like a strong believer in the words, "Bitch, get back into the kitchen and make me a sandwich". :]
(0)Your mom's a smart one. She's just doing what's best for you.
(0)oh god, same here. my mum's always going on about how a woman ought to be a little less knowledgeable than a man, and well, frankly it makes me want to punch her in the face.
(0)You have matured and your mother simply can't handle it. You can still find a guy if you want. Ignore your mom and go and become more successful than her.

(0)WOMEN RULE.
END OF STORY.
(0)Since you're an intelligent woman, you'll find an intelligent man... thank god you won't be married to some hillbilly of a husband who's too insecure to have a smart wife! Good luck dealing with your mom lol
(0)women with opinions are a nuisance
(0)ya go back to the kitchen XD
(0)i understand you very well since i live in a muslim country as well. please speak up for your rights and don't be what the society wants you to be or you'll always regret it.
(0)Your mom is an idiot.
