She either intentionally turned off her computer with out saving... You do realize the power could have blinked out for just a second, the computer could have randomly shut down (in particular if you are on vista), the computer could have frozen up because of background applications, etc and you still would have lost your work. I think we have all experienced similar saving accidents. While I myself have forgot to save every so often as I should, I have the lazy way to save (at least in Word) that has saved me many a time: hold Ctrl on your keypad and press "s", and there ya' go. Reopen word and it will be there. It autosaves as a default every 10 minutes, and you can change. Will open "Document Recovery" as a little sidebar when you open word/openoffice.
Unless your mother turned it off spontaneously as you left the room, it will be there, fully saved, and complete. Otherwise you may have to do the final paragraph again.

If one is working on a paper for days, they're justasking for something to go wrong if they don't save at least once in a while. Anyways, this is probably BS since at least MS Word and probably most other word processors auto-save in case of power failures or power-miser parents.

How is it your mother's responsibility to save YOUR work? Unless you kept it up on screen, she had no way of knowing you hadn't done so yourself. And who works on something so important that it takes them days to finish it, without saving it in between edits? No, you may not have been expecting your mother to turn the computer off, but any number of things could've happened in the time you were in the shower (power outage, software crash, or computer freeze, to name a few) - which is why they always say to save your shit before walking away.
Is she computer illiterate because she turned it off without saving, or just because she usually is in general? If it's for not saving - then seems to me that you're just as computer illiterate, if not more so since you were the one who should've known better than to not save.

fyl for losing all that work. believe me i know how it feels....butttttt ydi for not saving it! i mean i'm only in 11th grade, and the first thing i was ever taught when i started middle school was to save every few minutes. you never know when the computer is just randomly going to shut down or something like that...I had been working on a book report for a while....and i was in the middle of finishing it when the power flickered....needless to say i lost the last part...=/

If you had been working on it for days then you had to have saved it at some point. And you technically were indeed wasting electricity. I think just about everyone has gone through this once and it was enough to learn to never leave your work unsaved. Now, hopefully, you are also smart enough to learn from it. And your mom is only like 10% at fault. The rest is all you.

2. You always save as you go. No telling when there's going to be a power interrupt that would make your computer go off, which would be the same as your mother turning off the computer. I save after every few sentences when writing something, because that's happened to me in the past.
3. Who finishes something like that and then doesn't save it, but rather goes somewhere else while there are other people in the house? You don't take a shower when your mother might mess with your computer like that... sheesh

That sucks but if you were working on it for days the whole thing at least didn't erase (assuming you saved your previous work from days before).
You deserve this because you didn't actually save it at any point in time. You finished it, and then you let it sit there. You're an idiot. You always save your work multiple times. I hope you learned your lesson. It really sucks ass, but you were pretty much asking for it if you didn't save your work.

How could you NOT save your work every few minutes, if it's that important? I agree with everyone saying YOU'RE the computer illiterate one. Get used to hitting control-S after every few sentences of any essay you ever write. L2save.
You should've gotten Microsoft Office 2007, if you know that there would be a possibility that your mom would do that. Office 2007 autosaves it just in case of sudden shutdowns. (My Laptop's got low specs, and shuts down suddenly frequently, so 2007 really helps.) Aside from that, you should've saved once in a while, especially if you've been working on it for days.
Not 100% appropriate to the situation, but as the saying goes: "Save often, crashes happen"

i have NEVER lost work due to not saving because EVERYTHING i write is hand written in a notebook first. i may change things or rearrange once i type it up, but by the time i type it, it's mostly finished.

default autosave is 5 mins, so unless you wrote your essay AND took a shower in under 5 mins (which would make it a crap essay anyway and easy as hell to recreate), this FML is total crap. Oh, and if you've turned off autosave, you're an idiot.

Your mom definitely should have saved before shutting the computer down with an essay up on the screen. However, if you had been intelligent enough to save on your own before leaving the computer to shower, it wouldn't have been an issue. Your mom's the catalyst only by chance. It could have been a power outage, or your computer just freezing, or any number of things, and saving on a regular basis is just part of what you do to protect your work.

YDI for not saving your work. You're always supposed to save your work as you go along in case something happens, like if someone shuts it down, there's a computer error, whatever. It's something I was always taught in school, and it's just common sense. Don't know what they teach in Singapore though.
