Today, I was taking my boyfriend to meet my grandparents. They live on the 27th floor. Alone in the elevator we started making out. Turns out that theres a camera in the elevator, connected to every apartment. My grandma asked me how it was. FML

That's not a FML at all, if your grandmother actually likes you and is still what we can usually call "human", she'd perfectly understand and even laugh a little at your ownage.
Not sure why everyone is calling bs on the camera thing. I've been in a few places that are like that. It's called security. The one's I've seen usually have at least one cam at the entrances (manned entrances) so that they can ring your unit and you can see who is trying to get in to see you. It's pretty upscale to have this type of system but not unheard of.

I've only heard of cameras at the main door going to every apartment. I've only heard of elevator cameras going straight to the security office and such, not to every apartment.

it sounds like this whole building may be a complex for the elderly. that way, if they see someone sketchy in the elevator, they know not to open their door. old people can be defenseless in those situations.

That's wrong on so many levels. A lot of people make out in elavators. Having a cam linked to every room for whatever perv wants to watch people make out or maybe see a cleavage shot is fucking messed up hardcore.
There's no reason to have cameras visible from all rooms. A security office, sure, but not private residences. Maybe even one right outside your door so you can see who is at your door. But this...
This has to violate some... privacy laws. A woman could be adjusting her bra, or any number of things.
It's too sick for me to actually believe it.
I call BS. It's quite possible, even probable that the elevators have cameras, however they're connected to a recording device (VCR, DVD-R, DVR or some such) and may or may not be monitored by an actual live security guard.
No way is it connected to all the apartments.
Fake. Doesn't exist. That would be utterly ridiculous. Waste of time, money, and materials. Also serious violation of privacy.

Man, there are a lot of ignorant house-dwellers here. As far as I am concerned, in almost every single elevator I have been on, be it residential, commercial, or what have you, there are security cameras. In addition, it is by no means uncommon to have the feed for those cameras linked to residents' televisions. In fact, I lived in one of those apartments.
If you ever lived in a city, you would understand that security is a major concern, and a big problem in residential flats is the fact that it is so easy for sketchy people to come and go into buildings as they please. Fire escapes are a prime hangout place for them. No, elevator cameras are NOT creepy.
I would put money down that this FML is NOT fake. Come on, you guys. FML is meant for entertainment, and scrutinizing each post for its validity does nobody any good.

For all the people calling "fake" quick googling of "elevators condo monitored" popped up the following from this condo:
"Guests must be rung in by residents, while homeowners have easy access to the building with their own HID cards. Common vestibules, hallways, elevator, and parking area for condo owners are monitored by security camera systems that may be accessed on television from the comfort of their home." (emphasis added).

Has anyone even thought of the fact that it could have been a place for the elderly... and thus the cameras were there to keep them safe? I know I know.... security guards are top notch and can protect anyone from any threat.... but in the crazy case they can't I suspect it wouldn't be a bad idea to allow the residents to see the public areas and see any threats/suspicious characters coming.

Honestly making out is nowhere near the worst thing you could have done in that elevator. So unless there was some serious touching or some actual sex there, I don't see how this really merits an FML. I mean, it sucks I'm sure, but usually the FMLs that get onto this site are pretty big ones. I just don't think this fits. Also, I think there's a law or something that if you do have security cameras monitoring people you need to have signs somewhere saying the property is being monitored. Of course the signs probably don't have to mention that residents can see the camera feed too. I also agree it's a bit of a privacy invasion just because you tend to feel safe alone in an elevator. They should monitor the halls instead. As long as they have cameras to show you who is outside your door I don't see why they need them in elevators.

Also, to the people saying this isn't that bad, remember that EVERY apartment can see what's going on in the elevator, and this sounds like a huge complex (27 floors, at least). I know I'd be embarrassed if potentially hundreds of people had just seen me make out with my girlfriend.
That, however, brings up a bigger objection to this FML than other have said: what kind of 27-story tall building would only have one elevator in it? I guess the residents could toggle through multiple security cameras, but it seems weird that the OP's grandmother would be watching the one with them in it.

to #78: It's possible that the happy couple rung the bell to the granny at the main entrance, and it's just a nice and sweet thing to do to make sure you get in and out of the elevator safe! I'm now in Hong Kong where people can live as high up as 50th floor and it's very common for all security cameras fed through TV antenna to all apartments just in one screen. I'm actually amazed when I read people calling it fake!
Also a big NO to everyone calling it intrusion of privacy, elevators are a public place within a private property: it's public to everyone living in that property.

Many cable companies use their technology where they can dedicate a channel to an apartment building's lobby and/or elevator camera feed. It's really simple to do in 2009.
The camera part is a load of crap. I bet she's just proud someone would actually kiss her, and wanted everyone to know.

I'm not at all surprised there was a security camera in the elevator. However, usually they just route to a single security guard, or maybe a few in a larger complex, who would be watching for suspicious activity or danger. I can't think of any reason why every apartment in the complex would have access to the security feeds...
