Today, I used the tanning booth for the first time. Not only was I so white that I received first-degree burns all over my body, but I also forgot to remove my knee-high socks. FML

You know what being "first" says? It says, "Hi World, I have no life so I troll places praying I can be the first to write "first" down but I won't offer anything to the conversation. World, I am a loser and proud of it. FYL Loser."

Yall are ignorant. Tanning does increase the risk of skin cancer, BUT so does staying outside. If you take the right pre-cautions before getting in a bed, then you won't run into problems. If you stay outside all day at the beach you increase the risk of skin cancer. If you tan in MODERATION and apply lotion to keep the skin healthy, then you will be fine. Tanning also increases endorphins which creates a "happy" feeling in the body. Even dermatologists use UV radiation to cure some skin diseases. It also decreases acne. Yes there are those nasty leather looking ladies who have sunspots and lord knows what else, but it's because they tan EVERY DAY for YEARS. And have you SEEN the ladies who bake to a crisp on beaches? Beach sunburns increase the risk of skin cancer ten fold. So before you criticize people who tan, get ALL the facts.

#82 - On 12/25/2009 at 6:51am by saviisneat

(0)

saviisneat, maybe you should do some research before calling other people ignorant. Any natural tan at all is the skin's response to being damaged by UV radiation.

Australian anti cancer council: "Tanning is a sign that you have been exposed to enough UV radiation (from the sun or solarium) to damage your skin. This will eventually cause loss of elasticity (wrinkles), sagging, yellowish discolouration and even brown patches to appear on your skin. Worst of all, it increases your risk of skin cancer."

So if you need vitamin D, go out in the early morning or late evening sunshine. Otherwise, wear sunscreen and avoid solariums like the plague.

no you are wrong tanning is bad for you period. tanning is stupid. It doesn't look all that good and it gives you cancer and you get wrinkles when you are 35. Look at black people tan. My parents are in their late 50s and don't have any wrinkles or any skin problems and no one in my extended family has that either. you know why we don't sit in the sun just to sit in the sun. that and black people have more melanin which makes us more resistant to uv rays. go black people.

That sucks...but how do you FORGET to take off socks? Speaking as an ex-tanner myself, I know you don't FORGET to take off anything in those overly warm little beds.

Oh, and YDI for tanning. I stopped because I learned about the health risks. If you have lovely, pale skin, keep it that way. Use a SELF tanner for color.

There are good fake tans which don't make you orange and can look good. They also hydrate your skin. Hey, even I know this and I'm so white, I make snowmen look like black guys. Much healthier than getting blasted with heat which will increase your chances of cancer by a shocking amount. The socks bit is a FYL because with some knee high socks you stop feeling them after a while and forget they're there. But the whole situation is a YDI.

#18 - On 12/24/2009 at 2:30pm by ZombieKnickers

(+2)

Although now I think about it, the knee high socks, plus the heat of the sunbed means that they would become uncomfortable and noticable. So you deserve that too.

second, ... WHAT?! what does having webbed toes have to do with forgetting to take off socks? and they're still "SOCKS!" regardless of whether one has webbed feet or not.

Cut them a little slack, guys. Going during the winter first time makes sense...

#75 - On 12/25/2009 at 12:42am by lawlren

(-1)

I am pretty pale naturally and tan once or twice a week in the lowest bed possible for the lowest time possible, it builds up a tan and is safer for your skin.. I'm not sure how you wouldn't realize the socks were still on but it is possible not to burn and not to get skin cancer

#48 - On 12/24/2009 at 4:20pm by justsummerxo

(0)

Safer for your skin than what? Suncream?
I highly doubt sunbeds can ever be 'safer' for your skin...I could be wrong though.

#50 - On 12/24/2009 at 4:40pm by Alphabetica

(0)

If you get a base tan, you supposedly won't burn AS easy... Eh, I'm pale anyway. lol

#52 - On 12/24/2009 at 5:05pm by CheshireHalli

(0)

"Building up a tan" is just as bad as getting a tan quickly. Tanning is your body's natural defense against UV rays. When you're exposed to UV rays, your skin basically produces more melanin to block UVs from getting in. So yes, tanner people have a better defense against UVs, but their skin has been damaged more in order to get that tan.

Regardless of how long it takes you to get tan, you still have just as much damage done to your skin. So no, building up a tan or having a "base tan" is not safer by any means.

#64 - On 12/24/2009 at 9:25pm by lem0n

(-1)

Getting a "base tan" also doesn't mean you don't have to wear sun screen in the summer as well, as most girls seem to believe. You will still burn and still have the increased risk of skin cancer.

#69 - On 12/24/2009 at 11:19pm by XOfiestypixie

(0)

This exactly. I don't understand why people think they need to tan anyway. A tan is skin damage, period.

Also, didn't the poster realize that you're only supposed to stay in a tanning bed something like five minutes the first time?

#71 - On 12/25/2009 at 12:26am by haildixie

(0)

First degree burns are normal sunburns, it just irritates the top of the skin. First degree sunburns are nothing compared to second degree sunburns.

(-1)

Oh yeah, that's a laugh a minute, especially when it gets infected! Lol :-P

#56 - On 12/24/2009 at 5:41pm by Sazula

(0)

despite it being your first time, YDI.

any tanning salon SHOULD and most likely will ask if its your first time and figure out the right amount of time for you to be in it. the only reason you would be burned is if A) you went against what the counter person said and asked for a longer time anyways, or B) the counter guy is stupid.

AND- definitely YDI for the socks thing.. most tanning salons will also tell you everything you need to know before getting into the bed, which includes removing any clothing that covers anywhere you want to get tanned. they recommend you wear ONLY a swimming suit, if that, and before tanning, even out at the beach, you should always make sure that there is nothing on you that you dont want covered in your tan.

and depending on how bad the burn is and how white your skin is under the socks, it may take years for the tan line to go away.. i went to hawaii and wore board shorts in a convertible and forgot to wear sunblock.. this was at least 3 years ago and i still have a very clear tan line, despite spending my summers in the sun and trying a tanning booth to get rid of the lines. nothings worked.. so youd better hope that its not that severe of a difference so that you dont look silly forever.

#57 - On 12/24/2009 at 5:53pm by iloverichardhell

(0)

:O
the colour difference between my tanned and my not tanned skin always disapears after... 1 to 2 months!

Well I feel the opposite. Ankle socks really bother me, and I'd notice I'm wearing them, but I can forget that I'm wearing knee highs. It's still her fault though.

#60 - On 12/24/2009 at 6:21pm by hjordis

(0)

What did you think would happen? Tanning bed rays are just like regular sun rays. If you burn in the sun, you'll burn in a tanning bed. If you want to tan use a tinting lotion or something.

Also, how can you forget that you had socks on?

Actually, historically in Europe, it used to be regarded as a sign of wealth and class to be PALE, because if you were tan that was an indication that you had to spend your time outside doing work (which only lower class peasants would do).

Just a little tid bit of history for ya'll. I know today standards have changed. Today, being tan means that you have enough money to NOT need to work and can therefore spend some free time outside.

But in response to the actual post: I hate that this happens to so many people. You'd think that the people who work at tanning salons would notify their clients of the risks of artificial tanning. If it's your first time, you don't go for 20 minutes on the highest level bed. You have to moderate, ease into. Further, you FORGOT to take your socks off? Really? Moron. Seriously. (sorry).

No offense this is just an observation by a black person. What is with white women and getting tan. Like being tan isn't that amazing and unless you are naturally tan it is really bad for. White women are oh i want to be tan but then when they are 35 they already have wrinkles and buy all those products that don't work. You know why older black people look younger because we don't sit in the sun or in simulated sun just to look good. Any one who tans is a freaking idiot and needs to accept their body the way it is unless they want skin cancer and wrinkles when they are 35.

Solariums are sooo bad for you, worse than the actual sun. everyone should stay away! It only takes one lot of sun burn to create a melanoma later in life. even fake tans are bad if you do them often enough because of the chemicals. i am white...which sucks because tans hide cellulite better! but i'd rather not get skin cancer. did anyone see the 21 year old asian girl in australia who died from melanoma from using solariums?

I have been pale my entire life and i cant go to the beach without staying to long, so I tried a tanning booth 7 hours ago and i kept getting out and seeing that iwas still pale so i got back in.. i soon figured out that the maximum time is set to 14 for a reason!! I went for no tan lines and now my entire body is a dark pink and i have a very painful, tense, tingling sensation. If anyone can tell me what is happening, I would frigging love to know! If it helps I'm 14, never been tanning before, and had 3rd degree sun burns on my right arm 3years ago. Much Appreciated to anyone that can help me!
