Im guessing the OP is hurt cause in my experience people usually get other people not only what they think the other person would like but something they personally like too. . . So when the friend rejects the sweater because its not to their tastes they also inadvently reject the persons tastes who gave it to them. Complicated but I find that if you ask a series of sneaky questions or really pay attention to comments they make during normal conversation eg id love that shirt/skirt etc but im too broke right now or I found the coolest *insert item here* etc , you can find out what they want and get them that.
