Today, I saw a portable speed camera on the highway and braked hard. I caused a 4 car pile-up and my car is totaled. It wasn't a speed camera. FML

You ought to lose your license. From personal experience with a jackass who did the same thing to me, I can tell you that your insurance isn't going to compensate your victims the true value of their vehicles. They will be out several thousand dollars and loads of time dealing with the mess because of what you did.

ya kno generally getting rear ended is the person behinds fault because you are suppose to give yourself ample time to break if the vehicle infront of you (1 car length for every 10 miles i believe) so while yes the op broke hard and cause a pile up if they had hypothetically had to stop for a real emergency like a deer dartiing out( we have alot fo those out here) then the car behind shouldn't hit them so obviously they were speeding too and tailgating so its their fault which is why insurance doesn't usually cover all the damages for that

No if your car makes skid marks on the road because you braked hard as the OP said he did it would be OP's fault. The only exception is if there was an accident or some blockage in the road. It is 100% illegal to drive around and hit your brakes through the floor because you don't want a ticket

Isn't it nice to know you could have killed 4 carloads of people? I'd love to read the FMLs of the people in the other cars who now have to pay out the ass, because some idiot in front of them doesn't know that you shouldn't brake on the highway.
