Not a leg to stand on

Today, I found I'd inherited money through the death of my childless aunt, enough to be debt free and pay my entire mortgage. My cheating ex girlfriend found out and is demanding half, since my aunt died when we were still living together under common law. She’s getting solicitors involved. FML

In general most places don’t put inheritances as marital assets unless commingled with purchases, etc. You should be in the clear after some legal expenses and headaches.

Only a couple states recognize Common Law Marriages. Go online to see if your state is one of them.

Even if they were in a common law marriage, in the USA, even in a common law state, gifts and inheritances are not considered communal property. Let the ex-girlfriend go to a lawyer who then will explain that she has no standing.

1. Not only countries give rights to non-married couples 2. A lot of times inheritance and gifts are not considered as common property 3. In some places cheating is considered a reason not to split common properties. Or in other words you get to give half of the property to a lawyer rather than your ex...

It really sucks how often money just steamrolls morality.

The "cheating ex-girlfriend" isn't exactly dealing from a position of MORALITY, is she?
