His mistake wasn't making a spectacle of the proposal. His mistake was dating a band mate. Dating band mates is never a good idea. Don't dip your pen in company ink. It's unlikely your band will survive a relationship.

If you ask someone to marry you they have a choice and don't automatically have to say yes, so don't be mad when they say no in public if you ask them in public.
