Dude, maybe the bro doesn't want everybody on the Internet to know his real name, plus if OP uses a nickname, he will get called by it and it will remind him of work.

if it's done by mostly older folk the problem might be with them. There's a guy at my work who uses random nicknames for anyone who hasn't worked here a number of years because he can't remember names.
