Don't mess with Texas

Today, my boss gave me a verbal warning. My crime? Calling people "Hon'", "Darlin'", and the like. I work at a Texas diner. FML

I like being called "The Hun" when I eat because I massacre the beef and plunder all the biscuits.

I tip better, go more to a place and even recomend a place when they are nice and even call me sweety

I do that. I like it when ppl do that. But I guess some people don't.

you're not helping in the quest to break stereotypes.

And whats wrong with her trying to be nice???

Who cares about breaking stereotypes? If you try to do the opposite of what you think people expect, you're still being controlled by those stereotypes. Besides, if there is a good stereotype, that ISN'T something you should try to contradict.

Both are acceptable spellings

No. "Hon" is short for "honey," "hun" is like Attila the Hun.

Sweetpea22 14

If you look online it says both spellings are acceptable.

I'm just really amused that someone called Sweetpea is weighing in on this particular FML :)

It's my favorite endearment :)

God, that username. I hope it's an attempt at irony.

Sweetpea22 14

Um...Sweetpea is my favorite type of flower. There is nothing ironic about it

One of the reasons I really dislike the word hon is because it is not short for honey, they way people say honey is not "hon~ee" its "hunny" like in winnie the pooh, hun is short for honey, hon sounds like a pet name for someone younger than yourself in your family, like a grandchild

Ok 103, you're gonna have to clarify for me how exactly you know the difference between when people are using "hon" or "hun" when speaking to you. Do they SOUND different to you for some reason? And since when is "hon" not short for honey?

I don't particularly like it when a server calls me Hun or darling but I know that they have a tough busy job and aren't going to have the time to find out whether you like it or not. And to me as long as they do a good job and are nice it doesn't matter what they call me.

TheDrifter 23

What would you prefer they call you? I've seen plenty of women get mad at ma'am and men laugh at sir, but it's conversational awkward not to call you anything.

I don't know I'm not from the south so not every does it around here. So I may just not be used to it. But like I said they can call me whatever. In no way am I gonna go out of the way to make a big deal about it cause it's really not.

I work in a diner and we all do that...

Should have told him to "Kiss mah grits!" (giving away my age with that one...)

You should have responded with a suggestion that your boss start handing out name tags to the customers on their way in if he'd prefer you didn't address them as such. How else are you supposed to address strangers in a friendly manner? SMH

I feel like you should have gotten more than that. It's incredibly degrading and unprofessional, not to mention extremely annoying.
