I get that he should have just asked you politely to give him some space, which nobody wants to hear but I'm sure that we all have to at least once in our lives. But at the same time, he might just be uncomfortable expressing himself to have said that and took the 'easy' way out. Either way, the whole situation sounds FUBAR.
